When I was about 10 years-old my cousin, Renia, found this book. It was all about a girl who dresses up like a boy so that she can become a knight. As a little girl who thought the boys had all the fun, it was an instantly captivating story. The only problem was that this was the first book in a series of four, and it was fantasy. For most kids I don't think this would have mattered but this was before I convinced my mom that fantasy was okay for me to read, so she wouldn't buy me the next books and I couldn't find them in our local library. By the time I finally was old enough to buy the books for myself I couldn't remember the authors name, the title of the book, or even the main characters name. It was a story I assumed I would never finish.
Last week Dani came to visit me. She told me about a two-book series she had just finished by Tamora Pierce. When we went to the used bookstore they had both books for $4 each. So I got them and started reading. The writing reminded me a lot of the book from my childhood so I looked up Tamora Pierce's other writing and found out she has a series about a girl named Alanna who runs away dressed as a boy to become a knight. The series I got from the used bookstore is about this character's, Alanna, daughter. To make a long story slightly shorter, I went to the bookstore and bought the first two books of the series about Alanna, and it is the book from my childhood. I bought them yesterday and I am already well into the second book; I'm so excited to finally be able to finish the story. I feel a little silly over how excited I am, but it is something that I never thought I would be able to find, but I did. I can't wait to finish the series that made me first start reading fantasy, and also a series that my parents silly religion kept me from finishing when I was a kid.
