I have started painting my cottage using a timber stain with linseed oil in it, the colour is called nutmeg, I painted the steps too, I want to get some mesh or tread for the steps as they can be quite slippery when there is a frost, I have attached a dual tank LPG set and rain hood, you can see it on the right, I painted the rain hood with enamel paint so it doesn't rust, and I think the blocks on their side work quite well as a base but I might add some concrete tiles on top of the blocks for added stability as they would be as wide as two blocks, I will get some ebony stain for the blocks which is a sort of dark grey, and I'm thinking of running some trellis between the blocks to keep animals from climbing under there, you wouldn't think it would be a problem, but a sheep has already crawled under there and died, the smell was special, and I don't relish the idea of roosters climbing under there and crowing at 3am as they sometimes do.
I'm going to paint the inside of the glass of the lamp with an amber glass paint so it doesn't attract moths and I will be installing solar charged LED array in the lamp part, I tried out a silly little solar garden light in it and it was pretty cool, but I think more light than a single LED is needed so I'll go with 36 LEDs, but I won't have it on a light detector it will be switching on and off from inside so as not to waste the batteries and not to annoy anyone, but it should provide good illumination for wandering about and or finding your way towards it.
As soon as it warms up a bit more, I'm going to insulate under the floor I already have foil backed pink batts for that and I will add some polystyrene to that as well, and strap and staple it up.
I installed an old fashioned key lock in the door the other weekend, that was a mission, there were wibbly wobbly staples and a nail in the key way which I didn't find until it was too late to shift the lock but I persevered also the door opens outwards, so the lock kind of has to work backwards but that wasn't a problem and it does make for more space inside.
I'm going to raise the roof about a foot or two and I have some much longer corrugated iron for the new roofing so I can have proper eaves and an overhang by the door so you don't get wet when you are standing there opening the door.
The roof will be green.
