This soldier needs a little shore leave

Ugh. I'm really tired for standing up for what I believe in. It's gotten silly how much I've needed to do that. In my mind I have this romantic image that I'm some soldier for God, but to use the army's slogan, I feel a little too much like an 'army of one ( Read more... )

There are some good books refuting the DVC that shouldn't be too hard to find. You might try recommending some of them.

In both of your cases, it's not so much as finding books to set the record straight (or at least even the playing field) as much as it is to get them to actually READ them. I figure they owe the rest of us that much at least for being such self-rightous jerks.

For the record, I read your other entry about the pastor-in-training, but just didn't have much to say to it, I think. Sounded like a pain. Though I don't know the guy, sounds like a pain and sounds narrow-minded.

Yeah, I thought that the guy's remarkable display of narrow mindedness would trigger some response from you. I share your sentiments when it comes to dealing with people like that.

Nice icon, by the way.

I would have to say that no religion is totally correct, but to say that one faith is wrong or not as good as another is even worse. The idea of organized religion is to help people live better lives. If im not mistaken isnt the DVC a work of fiction? You should not have to defend what you believe in and if people say you are wrong who cares just as long as you are happy with your faith.

I am sorry I didn't respond to your other post, I really didn't know what to say. that is the crappiest thing ever that you have to deal with people like that...
i think we will always have to deal with people like that though.

And it's crappier that your whole family is acting like that.
Honestly try not to be concerned and argue. just pray. because everything has it's own timing.
People really are affected more if you don't argue probably than if you do.
you know what i mean?

exhaustion is on everyones agenda though :0

Well, they're pressing the arguement... not me. And shortly after I had posted this I found someone on my iTunes network with the entire DVC on audio, so I've been listening to it. I can't believe that anyone takes this seriously! It's like saying a Tom Clancy novel brings insight into clandestine military affairs. It's not worth disturbing the family peace over, that's for sure. It's a GOOD book, but it's certainly not history.

The truth is, no one in my family is capable of providing a good counterarguement to DVC other than me, as I'm the only Christian in my family who knows jack about history/art history/church history because I'm a huge history nerd. I thought this whole DVC thing would blow over after a few months but it's actually gotten worse as time progresses, so I'm not looking forward to the future in this respect because I can easily make idiots of my DVC family cultists.

It's an okay book if you read it for what it is... and that is FICTION.

It's not presenting new ideas. The little hisorical antectdotes the story uses have been issues with art historians and christianity for a very long time. DVC just popularized and sensationalized it for the sake of telling an interesting story.
