Bertha Vanation. Aw yeah. Anywhozzle, why oh why do I *still* hang out Downtown in Bristol on the 3rd of July?! It is always a clone of the same ole tired scene; overcrowded clubs/bars/whatevers that charge like 10 bucks to cram another poor soul into it's messy mass, then overpriced drinks and crappy music and literally no room to even do a nice drunken sway. Srsly, I couldn't even have started a good old fashioned bar fight if I wanted to. I'd have to ask the gentleman (or lady) in question to step outside so we could swing chairs and hurl cue balls at each other in a civilized fashion.
So anyways I met up with a few pals and we headed over to the half-dozen or so taverns on the sprawling waterfront, and then my brother's crew went to a place so jam-packed I was worried if the seven in my gang tried to get in, the Fire Marshall would have closed the place down. So we headed over and waited in line for the pleasure of paying 10 bucks to get in, then weaved upstairs to the second bar and ordered drinks while we listened to some crappy hippy band do their thing to appease the celebrating drunks. But then, at 12:40pm, some white halogen track lights came on and I knew what was gonna happen. Over the next few minutes the swarm of cops in the place (they were EVERYWHERE last night) crept in a semi-circle around the crowd, placing themselves neatly around the bar and at exactly 1am they pounced, yelling and corralling every drunken and semi-drunken patron out into the street, and then the other crowd of police outside worked the teeming mass of libation-littered folks and proceeded to herd them up the street away from the bars. Not smart. I rallied my crew and we headed out swiftly, making plans to remove ourselves to my parents' home, which was nearby, so we didn't get caught up in the fracas which was inevitable. Angry, annoyed cops and angry, annoyed drunks do not mix. So we left and came back to my parents' home, which was much more fun. We put on some nice music and had some more party ingredients, and tried unsuccessfully to coax people into the pool and hot tub. Oh well. Maybe next year.
