I've thought for a long time that the 'deities' were the worst bureaucrats in world--in all worlds. If that's a curse for their amusement, then clearly I am right. Rather than a cloud or a temple, they have an office. And we know that they complain about paperwork. Little wonder
And given how often they do complain, or have complained, about paperwork, then it's little wonder that they'd strike us with a curse that would imitate their world and all the problems they see in it. That is, if curses are designed to make us miserable. I sometimes wonder if the curses aren't designed for the 'deities' to take some amusement at us. Perhaps it's a matter of their amusement at our expense--it's not merely our misery, but their enjoyment of our misery. But that's one theory that may be completely impossible to test.
I wasn't cursed, though. It's unseemly for someone of my rank to be fetching coffee and papers. I am still an earl, even in the City--it's just an exile, after all. I've not been stripped of my rank at all.
Really, I don't know what anyone actually managed to do that day. There seemed to be a lot of messages sent back and forth and not very much came of them. Admittedly, that's not so different from any other day and all the messages sent back and forth on the Network. But, still, these seemed far less useful than any others.
I've known a few businessmen before. They seemed to do a bit of that: talking and talking without accomplishing anything. But when they were set on something, there was rarely any stopping them--not once they'd seen a glimmer of money. I admit, I do keep a business here in the City--and one that did very well during that curse--but I hardly consider myself a businessman. It's a matter of inheritance, so to speak, and entertainment.
Either way, if that's the picture of business in times after mine, because it didn't resemble any of the offices I've seen before, I feel rather sorry for the businessmen and their staff. It seemed perfectly wretched and nothing but drudgery.
[Private to Rosella and Sam || Moderately Hackable]
Rosella and Sam, I meant to thank you sooner for inviting me to dinner, but with the curse earlier this week, I thought my message might be lost in the confusion of the curse. So now that the Network is back to normal and a bit quieter, thank you, truly, for inviting me over. I had a splendid time and I was very glad to meet Sam at long last.
Although now I feel as if I ought to return the favour. I really should, you know. Give me a little while to think of what I can do, since I can't cook--not at all, and so certainly not as well as Rosella--but do expect an invitation in return. It's only right. I shall have to think of what I might do.

It wouldn't be such a bad thing to have an entertaining curse again, I think. We've not had a festival in quite a while. I say it's high time the City gave us one again. Surely there's some holiday to be celebrated in high summer like this.
Although I have been invited to the beach, I believe. I'll take that for a festival and say to hell with the curses again. That will do for the meantime.

[ooc: So I don't even know what happened to me this week. It's like I vanished. IDEFK. Hi. I'm back--much as I can be. Sob. No, Cain was not affected by the office curse. Leisure class. They don't work. He just saw all the madness going on and tried to keep out of everyone's way. And, yes, I think the cafe was busier than usual yesterday with all these businesspeople rushing in for their morning coffee.]
