Police seek well-mannered robber in 9 holdups around Broward and Palm Beach
He's polite, well-dressed and, according to police, makes small talk with his victims before pulling out a revolver and demanding money.
The man wanted in a string of nine robberies since late June has held up video stores, restaurants, and a vitamin supplement store in Broward and Palm Beach counties, police said. The most recent: a Margate Papa John's Pizza robbed about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. That heist netted about $65.
Police say the man was captured on surveillance video entering a Fort Lauderdale Blockbuster on June 29. Fliers were made, and several other victims recognized him, Margate Detective Chip Kolenda said.
"We've all been discussing together, [and] everybody is giving an identical description," he said. The suspect is described as being in his mid-20s, between 6 feet, 2 inches and 6 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 200 to 275 pounds, with freckles and crooked teeth. He may speak with a New York accent and has a large build.
Investigators think he has a connection with Margate or Coconut Creek.
"It's amazing that he's gotten away with this so long," Kolenda said. "We don't know if he ... travels to or has a connection in or may be staying in one of the areas."
He typically enters businesses around closing time. According to police reports, he may talk on a cell phone, ask to look at vitamins, or, as in one case, buy a chicken sandwich.
But after the niceties, he'll pull out a black, short-barreled revolver, point it at the clerk and calmly ask for the money from the register or safe.
Kolenda said police are concerned because although no one has been injured, the suspect shot at the register while robbing a Margate Subway.
"That is a sign of a desperate person," Kolenda said.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 or Margate police at 954-972-7111.
