I've wanted to make this post for years. In my living room is a stack of stapled-together school notebook paper from the mid-to-late 80's, and on at least half of these pages, I drew pictures of blood geysers erupting from cartoon characters' eye sockets when I should have been learning my multiplication tables. Hey, here he is right now, in icon form...

I dunno if I was consciously influenced by Barth when I created Rump (he seems like the eldest of the Punks, with his neck-wrinkles and jaded attitude-- he probably drinks at the Vern). But You Can't Do That On Television was undeniably one of my top influences from '85-'89, along with Mad Magazine, Garbage Pail Kids, and Weird Al.

last year, i bought a MAD magazine after all these years, cuz i remember how funny i thought it was as a kid. i was let down after i realized that some of the pages contained the EXACT SAME JOKES, some w/ even the same illustrations. poopie.
