“This foundation of our economy, the American worker, is strong but it has been put at risk by the greed and mismanagement of Wall Street and Washington”
This is exactly like Hillary Clinton demonizing the 'elite opinion' of economists at the end of the primaries for her gas tax proposal. She IS elite opinion.
And McCain is supposed to be some stalwart of conservative opinion, who is from a prominent family and graduated West Point, so he's not exactly a 'regular guy'. But there is no evidence bankers behaved illegally, just that they responded to the incentives presented to them.
Even if you think bankers were somehow 'greedy', that is like complaining that corporations are profit-maximizing. Expecting anything else is pure stupidity. If bankers were doing something you didn't like, it was directly a result of the rules you(the government) made.
In my opinion, the correct response to this $700B bailout is to hire some quality investment bankers(someone good must be available), and to incentive them to maximize our country's profit out of this bailout. Warren Buffet just got in with his $5B, so it must be a relatively good time.
Additionally, Palin, a 'conservative' who enacted oil company windfall taxes in Alaska and supports oil trade embargoes, is one of the worst conservatives ever. Ever hear of the concept of a trade war? She should be forced to spend the next two weeks reading about economics and foreign policy on Wikipedia. At least then she might have heard of the
Smoot-Hawley Trade Act, and the problems it caused.
The lack of even vague pretense of principles and issues in this election blows my mind. I'm waiting until McCain calls Obama a 'doo-doo head', which is about the substance level we're currently at.
There was a day when I felt this was an election where I'd be reasonably happy with either winning, as a choice between 'real' conservativism and pragmatic liberalism, but apparently McCain had a rapid transformation and/or a stroke, and lost any semblance of his former self. Now it is a choice between sanity and insanity.
