Hello all, sorry about taking so long to post again.
Okay, in New York right now and slowly getting used to the new environment. Honestly, I don't think I was made for big cities. Tall buildings kind of freak me out and the masses of people make me feel a little clastrophobic. On the other hand, I loved Duessldorf and London, so maybe it's just new cities I don't like. Meh. Either way, yesterday I was wondering around from one street to the next and I actually knew where I was! For the first time I felt comfortable on the streets and was kind of going with the flow.
So, interesting stuff has been happening all week. All the playwrights are very interesting and a lot of fun. Jesus, I'm surrounded by people who outgun me. One of the girls wrote this great farce-comedy that made everyone roll on the floor laughing and one of the guys wrote a fucking EPIC about the death of Abraham Lincoln that left everyone gawking. Oi. Either way, we're all getting along and we've had some good bonding experiences. The other day a playwright had us do an exercise where we had to write short skits about either incest or white supremicism. Seeing as how we all wrote incredibly disturbing plays we all warmed up to each other a lot more.
They've also been taking us to a lot of plays on and off broadway. There was a production we saw the other day about Irish militants (I thought of you Jess) that was the bloodiest goriest I've ever seen in my life. By the end the entire stage was soaked in blood and covered in dismemebered bodies (no joke). Then they took us to this musical called "Spring Awakening" that was probably the most risque play I've ever seen; it was about teen sexuality and they did not attempt in any way to water it down.
So, I'm now working with my actors and director for the staged reading. It's a lot of fun, but I feel very... awkward since I'm surrounded by people analyzing and working with my writing like a professional piece and I'm just sitting there nodding and hoping they don't direct too many questions at me. My director is fucking amazing, though! Honestly, the man has taken my stuff and made it sound genuis; I have no clue how he does it but he can put meaning and depth into anything and be elequant while doing it.
Okay, I should get back to work now. Hope everyone's doing well!
Sam
