Part 2 "Hey, Bells,” Chris said, trying to balance himself at the same time, “we'll never get this shower in its right place if you keep wriggling about. Keep still for a moment, yeah?"
Chris was standing on a stool, holding a cordless drill in one hand and bracing himself against the bathroom wall with the other. Matthew was standing on the newly tiled floor and trying to hold the shower still while Chris attempted to secure it to the wall.
"I'm sorry; I can't help it if my hand slips!" Matthew whined, his arms slowly numbing from holding the shower high over his head for so long.
Dominic stuck his head in from the doorway.
"Everything all right there, guys? All I hear is Chris bossing and Matthew whining," he laughed, holding a thermos bottle in his hand. "Finish that up quickly and come for coffee and biscuits. I just got the last of the kitchen walls cleaned for painting and thought I'd take a little break now."
"We'll be ready in a minute," Chris replied, casting a pointed look at Matthew. "Right, Bells?"
Matthew sighed, a bit louder than necessary. "Sure." He watched Dominic disappear from the doorway and raised his arms up once more to grip the shower tightly. "Go on, then, before I drop the whole thing."
Chris placed the drill in an appropriate place and pressed the trigger, fastening the first screw quickly before moving on to the rest. After the first couple of screws were attached to the wall, Matthew could drop his arms. He shook them and winced at the sharp pain in his joints from having held his arms up for such a long time.
"You really should exercise more, Matt. That's just pathetic," Chris laughed. He was practically unaffected by all the physical effort that they'd put into renovating Dominic's new home, but that was hardly surprising given that he did it for a living.
Matthew glared at him, slightly offended by the implication. “Don’t you dare mock me. You know I’m not a professional like you. In fact I don’t even have to do this; it’s not like I’m getting paid or anything.”
“Which is a bit surprising, actually.”
“What? That I’m not getting paid? You do remember that I volunteered, and it doesn’t usually include-”
“Matt, I do know what volunteering means. I just think it’s a bit odd that you wanted to help, even though you don’t even know him. And you don’t have that much free time anyway; why would you want to spend it doing this?” Chris finished fastening all the screws and crossed his arms over his chest.
“Oh, come on, Chris!” Matthew laughed. “I just thought this would be a good way of getting to know him. And what else would I do with my spare time? Watch telly and piss about on my piano? Trust me; this is not a huge deal.”
“So, you want to get to know him?” Chris smirked.
“He seems nice. So, yeah. I guess I do,” Matthew said. He narrowed his eyes when he saw Chris still smirking. “What’s so funny about it?”
Chris snickered and shook his head. “Oh, nothing. Nothing at all. I was just thinking…” He paused, his eyes twinkling.
“You were thinking about what?”
“Just, that… you don’t usually care about new people so much.” Chris snagged his lower lip between his teeth but couldn’t stifle his smile.
Matthew sighed, already knowing where the conversation was going. “Just spit it out, Chris.”
“Do you like him?”
“Like him?”
“Like… like him?”
Matthew rolled his eyes dramatically. “Oh, give me a break…”
“Oi, I’ve never seen your hookups, I don’t know what your type is. And you just said you think he seems nice. And even as a straight, taken man I think I can safely say he’s not bad looking, or am I wrong?”
“I’ve never brought them to see you because there haven’t been any men, Chris. Not any that I could consider having a relationship with, anyway.” Matthew looked out of the bathroom, suddenly concerned that Dominic might be eavesdropping, but he saw no one. “But he’s… well, he’s not bad looking, you’re right. And he is nice.”
“I knew it!”
“But don’t you dare tell anyone about this! You know how most of the townspeople feel about... that. And what if Dominic is straight?”
“Straight as a rainbow, if you ask me.”
Matthew raised his eyebrows. “Do you know something I don’t?”
“Hey, even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you. There’s a thing called privacy, you know?” Chris laughed as Matthew rolled his eyes again. “But it’s just an intuition I have,” Chris finished with a wink, making Matthew beam excitedly.
They heard Dominic call their names from the other room.
“We should probably go before Dominic eats all the cookies,” Matthew said, wiping some dust off his black t-shirt. His friend agreed. With a mischievous smile Chris reached behind Matthew, grabbing something. Matthew was confused until he realized what his friend was up to. He jumped forward with a weak shriek, barely avoiding the stream of water coming from the shower, the manic cackling of Chris accompanying Matthew’s shout of protest.
“Oi! You fucking wanker!”
“Works fine, yeah? Just had to check,” Chris said, still laughing.
The friends walked out of the bathroom, Matthew punching Chris in mock anger on the way. They saw Dominic standing in the doorway to the next room, smiling and shaking his head at their antics.

After enjoying their coffee and cookies, Chris decided that it was too late to continue working. The group called it a day, with Chris leaving straight away. Matthew was just about to walk out when an idea popped into his head.
“Hey, Dominic?” he called and turned around, surprised to see Dominic right on his heels.
“Yeah?”
Matthew scratched his neck, blushing slightly. He wasn’t sure if this was going to be the right move, but he genuinely wanted to help the blond. “I was just wondering, since you don’t have a car… I’m driving to Auburn tomorrow afternoon. If you… you know, need something from there, I’d be happy to give you a lift.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. You’ve probably noticed that there’s a lot that you can’t buy here. I go to Auburn almost every week because of that.”
“Well… it would be great to go with you. I actually need some things for the kitchen that I was going to order, but it’s always better to see the equipment before you buy it, right?”
“I guess so,” Matthew answered, toying with his car keys in his pocket. “I’ll leave at one tomorrow afternoon; Charlotte will take care of the shop for the rest of the day. Meet me at the shop then, yeah?”
To Matthew’s delight, the Dominic’s face broke into a bright smile and he nodded. “Sure. Can’t wait.”
~*~
The next day, at precisely one o’clock in the afternoon, Dominic entered Matthew’s chocolate shop. He had left his apartment in Chris’ hands, who had insisted on staying despite Dominic’s offer to take the rest of the day off.
They had progressed well and the apartment would be ready for furniture the next day. Dominic was excited about going into town with Matthew, because that meant that the blond could pick up some smaller accessories that he hadn’t bothered to have delivered from his previous home.
He had been thinking about the home he left a lot during the time he had spent in his new hometown. He had left London in a hurry. Even now, it felt like the right decision, even though he had to leave some important people behind - including his ex-boyfriend, who was the reason for this sudden change of direction in Dominic’s life. It was all for the greater good, though, or at least that was what Dominic wanted to believe. A new life in a new place.
Dominic walked across the shop to the counter, shouting Matthew’s name when the raven-haired man was nowhere to be seen.
“I’m coming, just a second!”
Soon Dominic heard the jingle of keys and steps as Matthew walked into the shop with a small, brunette girl close on his heels. Matthew greeted Dominic and cast him a warm smile before turning to speak to the girl.
“I’m not sure how long we’ll stay, but it’s likely that you’ll have to close the shop today. Just leave the keys here when you lock up, I have another set with me,” Matthew instructed the girl, throwing his long black jacket on while he spoke. “Are you sure you’ll be okay? Just call me if you have any problems,” he continued, patting his pockets and making sure he had everything he needed.
“Yes, Mr. Bellamy, don’t worry. It’s not the first time I’m here alone, you know. I’ll be fine,” the girl reassured him.
“Of course, Charlotte. Oh, this is Dominic, by the way.” Dominic waved awkwardly at Charlotte. “And Dominic, this is Charlotte, my shop assistant. She’s in charge whenever I’m away.” Charlotte smiled at Dominic, nodding her greeting.
“Um, we should probably go,” Matthew said after a quick glance at his phone. “We don’t want to spend the whole day there, do we?” Without waiting for Dominic’s answer he walked out, looking quickly over his shoulder to make sure the blond was following him.
Dominic chuckled quietly when the brunet walked ahead of him. Matthew was obviously nervous about being with Dominic, and that didn’t go unnoticed by the blond. Dominic found that quite cute, no matter what the reason for this odd behavior was.
The blond leaped the couple of steps separating him and Matthew to walk side by side with him. Matthew’s car wasn’t parked far away, but Dominic certainly enjoyed the sheepish smile he received from the black-haired man when the blond emerged at his side.
Matthew fixed his eyes forward quickly and raised his hand to flick the button on the remote car key, making the red car’s lights blink as the doors opened.
The drive was spent listening to the car radio. Dominic had browsed through Matthew’s small collection of albums he kept in the glove compartment of his car. None of the albums satisfied the blond - he even openly giggled at the Lady Gaga CD he found on top of the pile. Eventually Dominic settled on a classic rock radio station, occasionally humming along with the songs as Matthew concentrated on driving.
“So,” Matthew said after twenty minutes of driving, clearing his throat and twisting the volume knob until the music was quiet enough for him to speak. “You haven’t told me much about yourself. I’ve been wondering why a bloke like you would want to live here. Where do you even come from?” He tried to be polite even though he felt like he was interrogating the blond.
“A bloke like me? What’s that supposed to mean?” Dominic asked in a fake annoyed tone, a hint of amusement assuring Matthew that the blond hadn’t taken offence. “I didn’t know there was a certain type that’s allowed to live in a small town.”
“I mean… I can hear from your accent that you’re not from around here. You’re alone, I assume, which means you’re not after a bird either. Why would anyone want to come here, in the middle of nowhere?”
“All right, fair enough. Yes, you’re right, I don’t have a family and I certainly don’t have a bird to follow.” Dominic turned his head slightly to take note of any reaction from Matthew, but the other man was unreadable - of course if he had known Matthew better, he would perhaps have noticed the slight quirk of his eyebrows and the finger that rose to lightly scratch against his chin for a fleeting moment when Dominic let out that particular revelation.
Matthew tapped his fingers on the steering wheel while he waited for Dominic to continue. It didn’t happen, though, and the brunet decided to try one more time before he would give up.
“You don’t have to tell me, of course, if you think the question is too private. I will understand.”
“I know,” Dominic answered confidently. “And I don’t think it’s too private. I think people will find out anyway. That’s the way things roll around here, isn’t it? I can assure you it’s nothing too dramatic. Just a relationship gone wrong…”
“Jesus,” Matthew said quietly and turned away from the motorway. They were approaching Auburn. “Did something happen in your relationship? I’m so sorry that -“
“Don’t worry, it was nothing too dramatic. Just… it was a short relationship but very passionate, if you know what I mean?” Dominic glanced at Matthew again, who smiled and nodded while still keeping his eyes on the road. “Everything happened very quickly. It was love at first sight, or at least that’s what I thought. Before I even noticed, I was trapped. My partner wanted to buy a house with me and get married and he even had two kids from his previous relationship with a woman. I like kids, don’t get me wrong, but the whole step dad idea so quick into the relationship put me off big time. I just… well, panicked, would be one way to describe it. I felt like I was being manipulated into the whole happy family thing.”
“Wow.”
Dominic laughed softly, relaxing in his seat. The worst was out of the way; he hadn’t told his story to anyone new after he’d decided to leave. “I know. Sometimes I still wonder how I let it all happen. I guess I’m quite an impulsive person. One day I just realized that I don’t want to live that kind of life anymore. The novelty of it all was gone only eight months into the relationship but we were already engaged, so it wasn’t that easy to make the decision to leave.”
Matthew slowed the car down to turn into a smaller driveway leading to a group of buildings a bit farther away. “So you just… left, then? Must have been hard.”
“Yeah. I thought it would be best to just move somewhere far away and make a fresh start, so I took a loan and picked a place at random, basically.”
“You really didn’t lie when you said you’re impulsive, did you? Fuck, that’s such a risky move to make. I hope it’ll be worth it.”
“Well, I would lie if I said I wasn’t shit scared. But still, I feel so… liberated, you know? Like there’s this whole weight lifted off my shoulders.”
“Must be a good feeling.” Matthew turned into the parking lot of a big shopping center and turned the engine off. “You should find everything you need here, I think. Let’s go shopping, yeah?”
Dominic hopped out of the car and started walking towards the shops, Matthew locking the doors before following. The brunet had to bite his lip when his eyes glued into the easy sway of Dominic’s hips, the material of his leather jacket hugging the slim figure in all the right places.
He couldn’t deny that he was a little bit surprised by what Dominic had told him. He wasn’t sure of what to think of all that, but one thing was clear: he wanted nothing more than to be part of the ‘fresh start’ he had talked about. Would Dominic even want to get involved with anyone so soon after everything had fallen apart?
Matthew leaped the last steps between himself and the blond, a new confidence in his walk.
Maybe he could convince Dominic that it was worth a try. Fresh start and all.
