Gradient Map Tutorial

Jan 28, 2007 20:55

Go from
to
using Photoshop CS.

Probably translatable (if your program has gradient maps)

1. Start off with this picture of Elizabeth Swan as your base.

2. Go to Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels. Then repeat for Auto Contrast.

3. Duplicate the base twice (Ctrl j) and set the top one to Soft Light at 30% and the middle layer to Screen at 40%. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur > 1 px for both of these layrers. Sharpen the base layer once (if it's oversharpened-looking, go to Edit > Fade Sharpen, and fiddle around till it looks right).

4. Click on the black/white circle at the bottom of the layers panel (see here) and choose Brightness/Contrast. Brightness -> +10 | Contrast -> +15.

5. Go back to the black/white circle and now choose Gradient Maps (refer to the tutorial linked to at the top of this page for help if needed). Left colour = A3793F | Right colour = D9C19B {colours}
Set this layer to Soft Light at 100%.

6. Make a fill layer and fill it with 04031C (a very dark blue). Set layer to Exclusion at 100%.

7. Another gradient map. This time with colours A47853 and FFFDD7. {colours}. Set layer to Multiply at 20%.

8. Final gradient map. Colours 43656F and EEDBCA. {colours}. Set to Multiply at 40%.

9. Now go back to between the Brightness/Contrast layer and the first gradient map. Take this texture by peoplemachines and paste it between those two layers. Set to Screen at 70%, then go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Brightness -> -20 | Contrast -> +10. Then take the blur tool at 100% and erase any of the scratches that cover Elizabeth's face.

10. Go back to between the base and the screen duplicated layer. Make a new layer. Go to Edit > Stroke. Choose a darkish colour from the icon (mine is 5D554E) and the size to 1 px.

And that's it. =) I've love to see any results people have. ^_^
