Why is it that we allow our parents - our families - to control our lives for so long? Or perhaps I should ask why they think they should be allowed to control our lives for so long. It isn't as though they are, as a whole, better people than we are. They have more experience, but that experience doesn't keep them from ruining their own lives or ( Read more... )

My my, Mukuro, we're certainly asking the hard questions tonight. I don't think half of the school understood you then.

I'm fairly certain that half of the castle never understands me. I'm not expecting much.

I'll always understand you, dear. Don't fret~

How reassuring to know that there's someone who'll always understand me.

I'll spare you the sob story of how my own parents neglected me through their work, but I'm sure you've heard it all before anyway. Any particular reason you're feeling so chatty tonight?

A sad story indeed. As for why - well, I'm simply tired of parents meddling in their children's business and expecting to be obeyed, and tired of children obeying and making people think that's the natural way of things.

Sadly it appears as though perhaps some aren't ready to leave the nest yet as you're so bold to do. Perhaps those who can't bare to leave their parent's side can truly be called children.

I left the nest long ago, if there ever was a nest in the first place. I suppose others tend to be more fearful, however, and don't want to try to think for themselves.

I do find it rather disappointing that there seems to be no one capable of thinking for themselves. Even I put up an argument with my uncle when the time calls for it.

Oh, some of them can, but too many of them make up excuses why they can't, or think that occasionally disagreeing with their parents or committing acts of youthful rebellion means they're thinking for themselves. In the end, though, they do as they're told.

Sadly that's the way it is in most animal societies. What the alpha male says goes. This could be said to be the same for our own more capable species. Someone says "jump", some say "how high?" It's commonly found in social situations too. The leader of the pack demands what they demand and more often than not they get what they want. In the end, humanity is nothing more than a pack of wild dogs in individual circumstances.

There will always be leaders, and it's natural for the weaker ones to want someone to follow. I just don't think they should automatically choose their parents, of all people - particularly if their parents have done nothing to deserve that obedience.

It appears as though this topic is rather disheartening for you. Hitting close to home? Or are you concerned about another's well being?

Disheartening? I wouldn't say that. Tiresome, maybe. Don't you ever get fed up with people being unable to think for themselves?
