They were captured by Dark wizards and their wands were broken, but in a moment of inattention they managed to knock out the wizards guarding them and run. They were chased to the ocean and managed to hide in this cave long enough to evade pursuit, but unfortunately found themselves trapped there as the tide rose.

How did the pregnant lady get in there if she can't get out.

They all came in through the mouth of the cave, which points toward the ocean. Unfortunately, they can no longer leave in that manner, since the incoming tide has made it impossible.
