A Month's Worth of Rambling-- Fashion, Chinese New Year & Re-discovering Hull

Feb 24, 2011 23:57

I'm overdue a journal post for a month. So here's a roundup of what's been happening all this time! Because of this hiatus, this post contains a collection of updates and stuff from lots of different genres, and a bunch of rambly musings. I complain a lot, and have rediscovered my own area of England :D

TL/DR:
Fashion: I'm trying some casual styles and defloofing my skirt so I don't knock stuff off mini-mart shelves.
Weirdies: +5 to creepy-people magnetism.
Chinese New Year: We ate loads, drank bucket fulls of tea, and I was out-eaten by a 3ft tall Yoda look-alike who piled away 4X the amount of plates I did. Shame on me.
Hull: Actually, there's stuff to do and see around here. Shock!
Conventions/Cosplay: TBA
Artwork: I'm commissioning again! Whoopie!

Fashion

Let's start with something I'm totally into, shall we? I recently learnt I would spend a lot of money on an entirely sequined leopard print dress but not £4.60 (or something) on a Bacon Cabonara Pasta dish from Wetherspoon's. This is mainly because the last time I ate at Wetherspoon's I spent 4 days on the toilet from food poisoning. Nice. Anyway, today was super warm compared to the freezing days we've been having so I tried something a little more casual. I'm not sure I'm comfortable in it, but I was dressed for about £10, so I can't complain. The lack of accessories makes me feel so... not right!

Here's a breakdown: Shoes £4 New Look sale, Dress £2.90 eBay, Cardigan £2.64 eBay, Socks free with a loli dress I bought, headband £1 in a sale at a local shop. Pfft, talk about cheap XD

People that make me uncomfortable sometimes known as "the weirdies"

Okay, everyone has these people. The past month has been full of them! Why do they come out now? I've been sort of bugged by at least 3 or 4 people a week, sometimes more, and it's started to get a little weird. I don't mean my friends, because they're all extremely awesome. I mean random people in the street who think it's okay to touch you, breath down your neck, or say inappropriate things to you. These are shop staff (or in one case, a shop manager! Gasp!), as well as people on the street. I know I'm going to get laughed at or people saying stuff because I wear lolita, but there are some people that just don't respect personal space. Such as a guy who came over to me when I was inside the bank trying to withdraw some money and was literally less than a foot away from my ear and said "I LIKE YOUR DRESS" so I could feel his stinky breath on me. This is SO not okay. Does anyone have any advice on good "getaway" moves? Or maybe you have a polite way of telling someone that you're confused and slightly creeped out by their presence. If so, I'd be glad for some pointers! I feel like going to the corner shop is one big "gauntlet" run!

Chinese New Year (!!!!! <3 !!!!!)

Yay! One of my favourite times of year has just been and gone. My lovely mother was kind enough to take me to a banquet <3  She's a fun-loving Rabbit, and this year is her year. It was great to see my great auntie who is elegant and glamorous as always, and some family and friends performed dances (including the traditional Lion Dance... which is noisy and scary but great fun), and some t'ai chi and something called "Kung Fu Fan Dance" which does what it says on the tin. (Kick some serious behind with a fan... sounds slightly Mortal Kombat-ish!) New Year lasts for 2 weeks, and in that time there seem to be lots of celebrations and spending time with family. Personally, I just love to see those elderly and well respected members of the Chinese community here in Hull and I feel so humbled by how wise they are. And how much they can eat!

Long story short, I ate lots of food, got very fat, and am now on a serious detox diet of cups of tea and Shreddies.

Re-discovering Hull! (Come on, if you live here you know what it can get like!)

This week I went for a walk to the town centre. I do this almost every week, but this was particularly special! On my way there a lovely young lady had her mother stop the car just so she could come and talk to me. Hull Lolitas unite! (All 2 of us!). So that was really lovely and special and made my day a little. I wasn't going into the town centre for any particular reason, but I randomly decided to walk into the tourist office to see just how rubbish and boring things were, and here's what I found:

THERE'S A SHEDLOAD OF STUFF TO DO IN AND AROUND HULL!!!!!! 111 111  one one

Go-Karting (like, did anyone even know we have a go-kart circuit here?), absailing, rock climbing, bat-watching, moth hunting, insect safari (seriously!), new art/exhibition galleries showcasing modern arts and pop and sub cultures, ale festivals, Medieval walking trails, and a renovated part of the city that had, until recently, been completely closed down and abandoned were just a few of the things on offer. That added to the obvious tourist attractions we have here (museums and archives, The Deep submarium, and good theatres) was a little overwhelming for me considering I'm the first person to say "there's hardly anything to do in Hull unless you like shopping"!

I'm going to spend the year visiting nearby nature reserves, I think.

Convention/Cosplay Update!

Because I've been hyper-mega-super-ultra-cannae-get-out-of-it busy recently, I probably won't be debuting any new costumes until May. I'm also not being able to get to many events at the minte, sadly. I'll update with more cosplay/convention news once I've manage to untangle this ridiculously complicated diary of mine. Please bear with me!

eBay & Artwork

Whether you love it or hate it, eBay has taken over a little bit of my life, haha!  (At least I don't have a machine gun and drugs in my coffee... oh come on you've been watching the news too!) Anyway, I'm going to be offering art commissions and original artworks on eBay again. I did this a while back, but then I got too busy to keep taking commissions on, but now I'm finding I have a couple slots because of slow evenings and insomnia (despite the hectic schedule) so I'll be able to focus well. I've been moving house a lot recently so I haven't had a very good studio or workspace for some time, but now I have the facilities again I'd like to commission again. There's something special about working on a piece with another person in mind instead of creating an artwork because you just had to get that idea about the sci-fi space girl with the giant Watermelon out of your head and onto paper! I'm glad to be able to offer this service again :D

Sincerest apologies for neglecting you all: I hope I never end up taking such a long break again!
