Another question for your consideration:

Ignoring the weirdo canon ripples around the timeline, we know that at the time of the Pilot, Sam and Dean have not spoken for a couple of years. Maybe this dates from when Sam first left for college, maybe it happpened during that time.

As Dean says in the Pilot:

If I had have called, would you have picked up?

I subscribe to the "Sam at college for four  years, hasn't spoke to Dean for two" theory.

I think Dean sensed at some point Sam found his visits difficult, that he was trying to establish a new, different life and Dean kept him tied to the old one. Sam, I think, loved having Dean visit. Part of him wanted to be with his family, but Sam hated those feelings. He wanted to be his own man, independent, and so he did start to resent Dean's visits as the represented a sort of temptation.

I think Dean may have, either consciously or unconsciously, forced a showdown with Sam, something to allow a clean break. for Sam's sake (add Wincest to taste).

Of course this changes from day to day ;)

What's you fanon on what happened? Who stopped calling? Did it happen quickly or slowly?
