New movie review!
American Hustle (2013). So David O. Russell is turning out to be a bit amazing! This is one of the those movies thats a bit hard to describe - reviewers tend to fall back on "genre-defying". Its a comedy, its a scam movie, its a love story, its a character piece. The closest thing I could compare it to would be the Coens' Burn After Reading.
The genius of the piece is in the characters who are both broadly drawn caricatures but also empathetic and nuanced. Its more romantic than the last 100 rom coms you have seen (and i hate romances so this is a big admission from me!) On first meeting none of them are particularly likeable and by then end of the movie you want them all to be your BFFs!
Its a star studded lineup - Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and even De Niro all put in stellar performances. At one point in the movie i gave up caring about the plot at all and just wanted five hours of these characters doing anything together.
