what's love got to do with it?

I’ve been poring over ash48's wonderful picspam illustrating Sam’s love for Dean, and thinking. There’s no doubt that Sam loves Dean. I don’t know if you can quantify love, but I have no doubt Sam loves Dean, has always loved Dean, as much as Dean loves Sam. That love has been amply demonstrated this Season - it hasn’t changed despite the tension ( Read more... )

personally, I think Sam's world fell apart. All he knew was that Dean was gone from this Earth. I don't think he knew what to do, I think he decided not to look, because well thats always had disastrous results in the past, and they have said to each other not to look. think the lesson of Bobby was close with Sam - the natural order of things is to die, and then move on - both for the dead and those left alive. Sam choose to do that. I don't think Sam had a plan until he hit the dog, and then he found himself on this new path.

I tend to agree with your analysis of Sam here, and I feel that should be enough, for both Dean and fandom, although obviously it's not. There doesn't need to be anything else going on, some "legitimate" excuse for him not to look. (Although I agree there probably is.) I respect and trust Sam as a person enough that I'm not looking for a supernatural influence here to make everything all right with again, both Dean and fandom.

I think Dean needs to realize that Sam having needs outside of him doesn't mean Sam doesn't love him, or he is not good enough, or all those other things he thinks it means. It just means that Sam have needs outside of Dean.

Dean, in his own selflessly self-centered way, thinks everybody's action is somehow related to him. It's really not, though.

I think what caught my attention the most on this post is the question about people equating Sam not looking for Dean with not loving him. This made me think. And realise that I have never, not even fleetingly, thought that Sam not looking for Dean means he doesn't love him. Didn't even enter into my head. It's just been a constant in my head canon for these two - Dean loves Sam and Sam loves Dean - and that love is as strong and equal and as abiding as ever. They would both so easily sacrifice themselves so the other could live. That will never change ( ... )
