lie to me

What’s wrong with lying?

Over the past couple of episodes there’s been a fandom consensus that Dean shouldn’t have lied to Sam about killing Amy - or having done so, he now needs to tell Sam the truth.

Why?

Often these days the truth - whatever that is , if it even exists - is held to have an intrinsic value. It’s good to be truthful, honesty is everything. But is it?

We all lie. By omission, by misdirection, or by outright statements of mistruths. We do it to save face, to protect our vulnerabilities or those of others, to cover up shame, to escape punishment.

I’m a great believer in lying. I’m very good at it. (or is that a lie?)

Why should Dean tell Sam the truth about Amy? What would it accomplish? Sam would be distraught and sad about Amy; he’d be angry at Dean, hurt at the betrayal. Would it make Dean feel better? Maybe - he wouldn’t have the burden of the secret, but he would face Sam knowing he’d broken his word.

What possible good would it do?
