Dean had waited his whole life to hear his father say those words. Thousands of times he’d played out a scene like this in his head; the moment when he finally got to hear those words or words like them. For an instant it felt like he’d always imagined: a release, as if he’d been holding his breath all his life. It was a brief gasp of air; light and good.
Then the realisation hit him like a sucker punch to the gut. As the lights started to flicker and Dad sent Sam off to check the doors and windows, Dean struggled to accept what he knew, in place of what he yearned for. This was not his Dad. His father would never show that sort of unconditional approval. The things I’m willing to kill or do… Dean had lived as if what he did mattered to his Dad because the reality, that only the Demon mattered, was unbearable.
