we're all scared: fear and Supernatural

“What if I should discover that that very enemy himself is within me, that I myself am the enemy who must be loved - what then?”

Carl Jung
Supernatural is a horror genre show. It's all about fear. Big bold letters on the billboard, people. But we don't expect our heroes to be scared. Oh maybe in passing perhaps, but just as a moment to overcome that ( Read more... )

I expect that each brother has more to learn about fear

I love your thinkys. They're smart. Fears is what's motivating Dean AND Sam but, they're reacting very differently to it, I so agree with you here.

Also, I'm amused, and... scared that almost all the posts about the episodes I'm reading end with lines of this type:
I expect that each brother has more to learn about fear. And that's what I'm afraid of.

It's going to be bad, yes?

Thank you! If I continue with my idea that Sam needs to reconnect with his fear, to battle what is happening to him, then I wonder if maybe something needs to threaten Dean (his biggest fear) to break through it? I am not sure, although i do know Kripke will probably surprise us! (although not with kittens and rainbows!)

So much truth in all you wrote. I've thought throughout the season that Sam's trajectory has been all about him trying to crush and obliterate his fears, whether over his demonic heritage or losing those he loves again and again, but perhaps in the worst possible way he could choose to do that. He wants so badly to end all the chaos and death so he doesn't have to feel it anymore, and when someone (or something) comes along and offers that as an option, it's so easy to be taken in. I thought his conversation with Cole revealed very strongly how hard he was trying to crush his fears and misgivings in order to keep fighting.

I love how in the last episode (and in other past episodes) Dean's battle against all this fear shows as sheer exhaustion. He's so exhausted that his whole carriage changed, and I feel for him so much.

Thank you for all your deep thinky thoughts.

Thanks. Yes I think Sam has shut off from a part of himself, and I think reconnecting with that will be improtant to save him.

I esp agree about Dean being exhausted - he really does look like its all egtting too much for him.

I think it's very astute to point out that s4 has really been dealing with FEAR more head on than ever in the series-- thanks for pointing this theme out so clearly -- and the Jung quote was perfect ( ... )

Excellent inisghts about Sam although i feel that whatever he's awakened inside him already has the upper hand. I think the 'real' Sam's conviction he is doing what he is for good reason, combined with what appears to be a demonic arrogance are combining to lead him further down the slippery slope.
