Meta-llicar: a muscle car meta

The Impala, the Metallicar, is such a central character in Supernatural that it is not an exaggeration to say there was as much anguish of its fate at the end of Season One as there was for the Winchesters (coz lets face it we sorta knew at least and Sam were going to make it).

After Season One

Real quick - you forgot Dean in this line - "(coz lets face it we sorta knew at least and Sam were going to make it) brought up an excellent idea in her comments to my meta. She said...

it looked like that moment when he was killing the trunk, he was going, "Fuck this. I'm through with this shit. I don't know what else I'm going to do, but it sure as hell not going to be this anymore." He knows part of his home is permanently gone with John dead, and so it's not worth it to see the Impala completely whole again, either.

And I just think that's BRILLIANT. I think that final scene is about how Dean doesn't want this anymore. He doesn't want the burden, he doesn't want the destiny, and he certainly doesn't want to rebuild his life again. *pets her sweet, broken, boy*

I love that the Impala has become the third main character and that it is such an important part of the story. We're writing meta on a CAR for crying out loud. A CAR. *L* But it's so much MORE than just a car. :)

Goddamn TAGS.

Real quick - you forgot Dean in this line - "(coz lets face it we sorta knew at least and Sam were going to make it)" Unless that was a slip and you know something we don't. *L*

You're making me think!! Can two theories be simultaneously right? *L* Because I still believe in my meta about Dean's emotional state (...a mirror for his emotional state as she eloquently puts it....you FLATTER me!! *blushes*) but you've pretty much convinced me that the car can also represent John.

The "Dead Man's Blood" scene in particular was really good. I hadn't thought about it that way but you're exactly right - John is loosing his grip on Dean. Dean and Sam have become a team in John's absence and John's trying to wrestle a bit of control back. "I'm the Dad, respect me, respect the car." I like that.

I totally think we are all right! And yes that final scene is so Dean rejecting everythign John stood for and how his life has been. *is excited* So Dean will be trying to create a life he wants/get on a new path. What will it be?

Think I will have to create a compilation post inc Impala canon and our theories like we have for the Demon.

*squishes our meta-y brains together*

I love a show (and a fandom) that takes me from porn-y to meta and back again all the time!

Just read this and it really made me think. I can definitely see how for Dean, the car is about Dad (and "home" actually, I think). While for other's, Sam in particular, the car's about Dean.

Your metas rock!

Thankyou! funnily i have been thinking about updating this because after the scene at the end of CsPwDT, then Dean's attack on the Impala does seem to me to be more about his own self loathing.

Yeah, I think him beating up the car was more about self-loathing. Someone commented to anteka's commentary that week with an awesome thought on that whole scene and Dean's feelings of guilt. *lemme see if I can find it* Here it is.

Yes i remember reading this, and at the time I was all "i htink its about John". I still think I made some reasonable points in my essay but revisiting it, my not so stunning insight is that it was ME who was very angry at John, and I was really uncomfrotable with the idea that Dean's self-hate could be so intense.
