As we should have predicted, something went wrong with dream house. I was being all sensible, didn't want to put it on Facebook and tell all our friends until we were sure it would happen. So the offer was accepted, 2 days later we spoke to the bank who said they'd happily give us the mortgage, and then I shared the news with the world. Literally 5 minutes later it all went wrong. Bank called back and said in fact they wouldn't mortgage us because the house was of non-standard construction. Now to me concrete with a steel frame sounds pretty sturdy, but apparently to a bank it says, "Do not give these people a mortgage!" After spending our only day off together phoning every bank we could find, we ended up withdrawing the offer :( Halifax were alone in offering us a mortgage but theirs had a ridiculously high APR. Even the mortgage brokers we spoke to were telling us not to go for it because we'd end up out of pocket. Another rather large problem would be that it would be impossible to sell in future. Felt very blue for some time.
But, thanks to lovely Mr Robot we managed to salvage some of our honorary Valentines day and had a nice dinner out with cocktails. Could have been worse. Could have got the house but lost him.
As I'm off on half term all this week I have been granted the responsibility of looking at some houses alone and feeding back to the other half. Very scary prospect! Not sure I'd know all the right questions to ask, but I would at least know to check what the house is built of!
As for this morning I have been up since very early, having had no sleep thanks to house stress (have also acquired a rather unsexy eye twitch over the last few days...) looking at possible other houses online. Am feeling slightly better than I was before, having once again expanded the area we are searching. Originally we were stuck on the area I'm living in at the minute, but that's starting to look like an impossibility due to funds & lack of houses for sale around here. I think we were mostly keen on this place so we'd be near our friends, but as they're all spreading out all over the city too it seems less important that we all be in the same place
