"That love and music can change" or "We're bringing brighter days"

Despite the fact that I've had "Billy Jean" stuck in my head for a week-and-a-half now, I think watching bits of the memorial yesterday has finally allowed it to truly start sinking in that Michael Jackson's gone. I'm not going to comment on his personal life. One, because everyone else is and I'm getting kinda sick of hearing about it; two because I didn't actually know him personally and; three because when it really comes down to it, it's not really any of my business.

Back in the 80s - back when he was actually black - Michael Jackson was It. His music, his videos, his dance moves. He was just incredible. nevergabe had "Moonwalker" on VHS and he and some neighbor friends of ours wore it out. I really believed he was magical. Mind you, I was born in 1981, so I was around 7 at the time.

Now, watching all the clips they've been showing from his ginormous catalog of video footage, I've been waiting for someone to show a clip from Captain Eo, yet I somehow keep seeing the same damned things. Not that the "Billy Jean" "Thriller" and "Smooth Criminal" videos aren't good. But mix it up a little!

So, it's YouTube to the rescue with the full video!

Captain Eo was an 3-D attraction in Disneyland's "Tomorrowland" long before "The Polar Express" or "Up" or "Chicken Little" or **gags** "The Jonas Brothers" movies. (I understand that Epcot had it, too - maybe stay_please can confirm this?) I've no idea when it actually opened, but I still remember watching Eo during some of my very first visits to the park; still remember being so scared when it looked like the "Supreme Leader"'s claws were coming at me that I slipped the 3-D glasses down just a little for that segment. Disney took it out in the early 90's and replaced it with "Honey I Shrunk the Audience," which has some fun effects, but it isn't nearly as cool.

Re-watching the credits, I'm surprised by the huge names of the people who worked on it. That's not something you notice as a kid. But the thing I really love about Eo is the idea that love and music can change someone; can bring out a person's inner beauty. And despite all the things that happened in his personal life and all the things he did to himself, I think that's the message Michael Jackson really wanted to bring across.

So, because no one else seems to want to show it, here it is. I wish you could see it in 3-D because it's so cool. For those of you who haven't seen it, you'll just have to try to imagine what the 3-D effects were like - and I'll just have to hope that if I had found it in 3-D, I'd be brave enough these days to watch the whole thing with the glasses on.
