Just had anther earthquake about an hour-and-a-half ago. A rather large one this time,
5.1 centered down in Orange County. It was proceeded by a 3.6 and has been followed by a series of aftershocks. They're calling it a cluster of earthquakes. I only felt the larger one, but I have friends who live closer to the epicenter that have had quite a

It's all relative, I guess, as you say. I took a trip to San Francisco a couple of years ago and completely forgot that they get earthquakes there. ...Until I got there and the news said there was (a small) one the day before I arrived. Dun dun dun. I was just relieved that I just missed it. I really do believe that I'd have a serious panic attack if I'd gone through it.
We do get tornados here in Minnesota that get very severe and scary, but the joke is you don't have to worry unless you live in a trailer park. For some reason, tornados seem to gravitate to trailer parks. The irony in that is, sadly, they offer no shelter. There are always exceptions, of course, and nearer the flatter part of the plains states (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, etc.) tornados are prevalent no matter the expense of home. I believe that (and it seems as though) tornados prefer a flat landscape to stay strong (for the most part) and that is the least desirable landscape here.
I do get very frightened in these storms, though. Yes, the skies do turn a sickeningly green color. That's when you know there are hail stones somewhere. My house got severe hail stone damage in 2008 or 2009. They were almost two inches in diameter and damaged my roof, siding, and my car. One even cracked the windshield!
I often wonder why I live here when the winters are nearly unbearable. It gets worse every year (it seems). This year was especially harsh. I think our snow totals this winter are well over 60" so far. Not to mention the two months straight of zero degree weather. Yech. Driving in it is the worst, not because of the snow and ice, necessarily, it's the other dangerous drivers on the road! I fantasize about moving to Hawaii or Texas or Florida... but I watched one of those "Find Me A Home" shows in Hawaii and, to be honest, there were things about the life there that seemed like something I wouldn't want to do fulltime - like spiders and other insects all year long. We endure what we know and are comfortable with, I guess! The unknown is the most scary.
The movie Superman (the original) scared me from earthquakes when Lois Lane is engulfed by the earth and is being covered in dirt. That scene scarred me for life as a kid!
