Lesson Ten, a 1919 documentary of a real-life, honest-to-God, ill-fated expedition to Antarctica, completely and spectacularly blew my mind. As luck would have it (for us - he might've disagreed), there was a cinematographer aboard the 1914-1917
Imperial Trans Antarctic Expedition, and the film is called
South The journey turned out to be an epic struggle for survival after the ship became marooned and frozen in ice, eventually sinking. The crew had to travel far and scale huge glaciers for help.
Parts of it were honestly some of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen on film. Not just a time capsule, but a time capsule of MAGIC. The adventurous half of me wanted to, like, buy an airplane kit and build a space ship. And the homebody half of me wanted to make hot chocolate and get a cat.
This is definitely a lesson I can get behind.
