Title: Harry Potter and The Vampire Slayer
Part II: Dumbledore
Author: Miss Witch
Rating: FRT
Summary: Dark forces are afoot. (Gee, that never happens!) Giles receives an unusual request and has to leave Sunnydale. This request has to do with the protection of a certain young boy with a lightning scar on his forehead. A BtVS/Harry Potter crossover story.
Disclaimer: I own nothing. Not even my car. BtVS belongs to Joss (all hail), Mutant Enemy (grrr argh), Fox, UPN, WB…. whoever. Basically, it belongs to someone who is not me, no matter how much I whine and beg.
Disclaimer 2: I so don’t own any of the Harry Potter stuff. If I did I’d be J.K. Rowling and well on my way to being the first billionaire writer ever.
Spoilers: This takes place before Season 4 of Buffy, and after Goblet of Fire
Feedback: Pretty please
Notes: [ ] means thoughts. Oh, and for the sake of argument and my sanity in writing this… Faith did not go bad, just to L.A. (granted, some would argue that it’s the same thing) It really has nothing to do with anything, but just in case you wondered.
The gang lounged in the various available seats in Giles’ apartment. They had no idea why they had been called there, but, as always, they were prepared to fight whatever ‘big brewin’ evil’ that was out there.
Buffy was unusually silent. She was sitting in her chair, staring absently at some point in the distance. Not even Willow had been able to find out what was going on. Buffy had just said that it was important, and wouldn’t say anything more.
Xander, Oz and Willow looked at each other in puzzlement. Everyone was there, and yet, no one was talking. Giles was in the kitchen making tea. Carefully, he carried a tray into the living room and set it down on the coffee table. Every one was given a cup and Willow noticed that there was an extra one.
“Is someone coming?” she asked, gesturing to the empty cup. Giles glanced at it, then his watch.
“Yes.” he told them. “But before he gets here, I have much to discuss with you.”
Their tea grew cold as Giles told them everything he’d told Buffy, about Voldemort, Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore. There was a collective gasp as he informed them that he had been offered at teaching position at a school of magic.
“There’s a school of magic?” Willow squeaked. “How come I wasn’t invited to go there?” Giles sighed.
“The headmaster of the American school is not as welcoming as Dumbledore. Albus Dumbledore accepts any student with magical ability, not just those from magical families. Dickerson, the American headmaster, does not accept those from Muggle families.”
“Muggle? What the hell is a Muggle?” Xander asked.
“It’s a non-magical person.” Giles explained. Willow stood angrily.
“So, what you’re saying is that if I’d been born in England, I could’ve gone to school to be a witch?” Giles nodded.
“That sucks.” she huffed, sitting back on Oz’s lap. Oz stroked her hair comfortingly. Buffy gave a small smile, but said nothing.
“You’re taking the job.” Oz said simply. It wasn’t a question, but a statement of fact. Giles nodded.
“I must.” he said. “Voldemort can not regain power. He made the Mayor look like a boy scout.” Xander looked horrified.
“What about Buffy?” he demanded. “Are you going to just leave her?”
“I’m going with Giles.” Buffy said quietly. If possible, Xander looked even more horrified.
“What about the Hellmouth?” Xander asked in the exact same tone. “Who’s going to watch it and make sure the Apocalypse doesn’t happen?”
“Again.” Oz added quietly.
“Faith and Wesley are coming in from L.A. to watch the Hellmouth for awhile.” she told them. Willow bounded to her feet.
“What about me?” she demanded. Everyone looked at her in surprise. “Here I’ve been, struggling with my magic, and you get to go to a magical school!”
Everyone stared at her, speechless.
“I’m sorry.” she said, her anger dissipated. “It’s just not fair.”
Giles nodded.
“I understand.” he told her. He took three thick envelopes from the tea tray and handed them out. Each envelope had their names written on them in green ink. Inside, they all found the same invitation on a piece of stationary from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Dear Mr. Harris, Miss Rosenberg, Mr. Osborne (not all on the same letter, of course)
It is my single-most pleasure to invite you to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as a special exchange student. Please find enclosed a list of all the necessary books and equipment you will need for the year.
The term will begin on September 1. You will need to take the Hogwarts Express to the school as you can not yet aparate.
Yours sincerely,
Albus Dumbledore
Headmaster
Oz’s letter contained an additional note.
Mr. Giles has informed me of your condition, but you needn’t worry, all will be taken care of.
Willow squealed with glee and did a little happy dance in the middle of the living room.
“I’m going to witch school, I’m going to witch school.” she sang.
“What the hell does aparate mean?” Xander asked. As if in answer to his question, there was a faint popping sound, and suddenly an old man was standing in the middle of the living room.
“It means that.” Giles muttered standing to greet his guest.
Buffy studied the man who thought so highly of her Watcher. He was a tall thin man with long silvery hair and a beard to match. He wore half moon glasses and his nose was crooked as if it had been broken once. Instead of everyday clothing, he wore rich blue robes, embroidered with silver designs of moons, suns and stars.
The gang stared at him in awe as he and Giles spoke quietly. After a moment, he looked around the room.
“Well, what a delightful looking group.” he said warmly.
“Everyone, this is Professor Albus Dumbledore.” Giles introduced. He gestured around the room. “Albus, this is Buffy, Xander, Willow and Oz.” Professor Dumbledore followed his introductions. His gaze rested on Buffy.
“Buffy Summers, the Vampire Slayer.” Dumbledore’s face grew serious as he studied her. “A heavy burden for one so young.”
“Yeah, it pretty much sucks.” Buffy said flippantly. Dumbledore held her gaze and said with a small smile
“Fighting evil usually does.”
Dumbledore studied the tiny woman before him. She had curled herself into a ball, making herself seem smaller than she already was. Her attitude may have appeared carefree. But Dumbledore saw the truth. Buffy Summers carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. She was voluntarily giving up everything she knew for a year to follow her Watcher into a world she knew nothing about. It hadn’t been an easy decision for her, but was based on her complete faith in Rupert, and something else Dumbledore couldn’t quite put his finger on.
Buffy fought the urge to squirm under the intense gaze of Dumbledore’s blue eyes. Instead, she met his gaze and held it, almost challenging him. Dumbledore gave her an approving smile and moved on to the rest of the group.
Albus Dumbledore didn’t need to be psychic to know that every single one of these people would be coming with Rupert to Hogwarts. Their loyalty to him and each other was palpable. They would never willingly be separated.
“Well,” he said, rubbing his hands together. “I’m so very excited that you lot will be joining us at Hogwarts.” Dumbledore told them, sitting in the remaining chair. He took the tea Giles offered with a murmured thanks.
“Rupert has told me of your exploits, and I have arranged for you to be special exchange students and take classes with the fifth year students. It seems that you’ve learned magic the hard way.” he chuckled. “I see no reason for you to go back to the very beginning.”
Xander had gone a pasty shade of white and raised his hand shakily.
“Um, excuse me. Um, sir.” he interrupted. “I think it’s pretty safe to say that I’m probably not ready to jump into 5th year magic. In fact, I don’t know that I’d be successful in first year magic.” The mere thought of trying to do magic terrified Xander to his very soul. Professor Dumbledore grinned cheerfully at him.
“My dear boy, you will be fabulous.” he assured him. “All of you would have been accepted at Hogwarts had you lived in the United Kingdom. Yes even you, Xander.” Dumbledore assured him. Xander gulped but decided not to argue.
Dumbledore turned to Willow.
“Willow, my dear, you will be taking some advanced courses with Professor McGonagall. She has graciously agreed to take you under her tutelage.” Willow squealed and clapped her hands.
“Thank you, thank you.” she said. Dumbledore turned back to Buffy.
“Buffy, my dear. I know that this is difficult on you. A room will be designated for you and Rupert to continue training. My hope is that you will learn some things this year that will make you a better Slayer.
Buffy smiled and nodded. Despite the fact that he was the reason she was giving up her entire life, she couldn’t help but like him. Dumbledore finished his tea and stood.
“Mr. Osborne, we’ll discuss your arrangements when you reach Hogwarts.” he said, smiling at Oz. Oz nodded his understanding.
“Rupert, you will take them to Diagon Alley to get their supplies?” Dumbledore asked. Giles nodded.
“Of course.” Giles told them. “I’ll make sure they get on the Hogwarts Express as well.”
“Excellent.” Dumbledore clapped his hands together, and looked around the room. “I will see all of you on September 1st.” He nodded at Giles. “I will see you soon, Rupert.”
And with that, there was a faint popping noise and he disappeared.
The silence that followed his disappearance was deafening. Finally, Oz broke the silence.
“Well, that was different. Even for us.”
