Summary: The war is over - now it’s time to party.
The war was over. The darkness and oppression that had shrouded the world lifted and excitement, happiness, and joy were felt across the land. Voldemort was dead and the remaining death eaters were quickly rounded up and tried for their crimes against the people of the wizarding world.
Professor Dumbledore was alive. It seems the rumors of his death were greatly exaggerated, rather, he and Professor Snape worked out a way to make his body seem dead thus fulfilling the Unbreakable Vow and keeping Draco from harm.
Tonight, Hogwarts was decked out in her finest - for tonight was a celebration of the liberation of the wizarding world from another Dark Lord. Professor Dumbledore had decreed a party with Muggle formal wear was to be the order of the day. This was a way to honor the diversity and culture that had been so maligned by Voldemort.
Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Luna slowly made their way through the crush headed towards the Great Hall. Harry reached over and gently intertwined his fingers with Hermione’s while giving her a soft, gentle smile. The two became a couple while the trio was out searching for Horcruxes. Ron and Hermione had actually tried to go on a date, however, after going though an evening of bickering over everything from where to go to dinner to what to eat, and then a kiss that was more like kissing a sibling than a romantic kiss; they realized that the were totally unsuited for each other.
Harry later fixed Ron up on a blind date with Luna. Though her outlook on life was a bit unusual for Ron to comprehend, he found that he had a great evening with her and that kissing her set off the fireworks that everyone said a good kiss would do. The two found that Luna was grounded by Ron and Ron was more tolerant thanks to Luna.
Ron, in turn, set up Harry on a blind date - with Hermione! The two of them had been attached at the hip from that moment forward. The two couples have been happily hanging out ever since - and the Golden Trio, became a Golden Quartet.
Upon reaching the doors to the Great Hall, they paused for a moment to get their bearings before entering.
“I can’t believe it’s all over”, Harry said with a smile at his love.
Ron looked at him, proud of all they had done to end the war against Voldemort. It was a bloody battle, but they worked together and defeated him - sometimes love was enough.
“Mate, we deserve this party. Besides, I’m starving!”
Luna and Hermione shot a look at each other and giggled. The two had long since bonded over their thirst for knowledge and Ron’s love of food. Hermione smacked Ron upside the head, “Ron, quit thinking with your stomach and open the door for your date.”
Ron laughed at her, pushed open the door, and gestured for Luna to precede him into the room. “Milady, after you.”
Luna answered with a laugh, “Why, thank you, good sir.”
The quartet made their way into the Great Hall, looking around in awe at the wonderland that was laid before them. The hall was filled with sunshine from the enchanted ceiling and the room charmed to resemble a fairy land - Lots of flowers, trees and plants which created a landscape of rich greens with splashes of vibrant colors as far as they could see. Ron was, of course, the first to break from the spell. He spotted the food table and started guiding the group that way. Ron’s eye was drawn to a woman standing in the corner talking to some one he couldn’t see. He heard her laugh ring out in the hall and smiled at the carefree sound. He admired the way that her black hair cascaded down her back in curls and the figure that was nicely set off by the green evening gown she wore.
He was drawn from his perusal by a poke in his side. Luna laughed at him again, “Ronald, do I need to go and get you a napkin for the drool?”
“Luna, my love, you know I adore you. You look ravishing in that gown!” With that he stepped back and raked his eyes over her royal blue dress. It really did suit her - with wispy edges and flowing sleeves, it fit her personality more than she realized. The look was topped off by a crown of dark blue flowers that adorned her head. He kissed her hand and looked into her eyes, “Lu, you know you are the most beautiful woman here, I’m so sorry that I was distracted by the scenery.”
Hermione laughed at Ron, glad to see him having fun and being carefree, “Who are you and what have you done with Ron? That almost showed the emotional range of a tablespoon! Have you been practicing? Has Harry shared his notes with you?”
“Harry! There are notes and you didn’t share? I’m hurt! I thought we were best mates!” Ron hit Harry playfully on the shoulder, “I’d share with you, don’t you know?”
Harry was about to reply when he noticed the black haired witch turning towards them. “She’s beautiful!” Indeed she was. The witch was the trio’s Head of House, Minerva McGonagall. The war ending and Dumbledore being alive had lifted the heavy weights that had been on the Professor’s shoulders. She looked radiant and years younger without all the worry to hold her down.
“Ew, Harry, mate, that’s McGonagall! She’s like old, remember?”
Luna and Hermione both hit Ron for that comment. Hermione adding her two cents, “Ron, she is beautiful, she looks years younger. There is a sparkle in her eye and the way she carries herself is different.”
They watched as a hand came to rest on the Professor’s shoulder. Long, elegant fingers adorned only with a single gold band. They saw the Professor smile over her shoulder and bring up her hand to cover the one resting on her. That’s when Hermione spotted the matching gold band on Minerva’s finger. “But I didn’t know she was married?”
“McGonagall is married???? But she’s old! Who would marry her?” Ronald’s statement was met with another smack, from Luna this time.
The quartet watch as McGonagall’s eyes lit up as she laughed at something that was said to her. She turned to the man in the corner and held his hand in hers.
Professor Dumbledore made his way through the crush to the front of the room. After his usual speech, he started the music for the evening which was to be a mix of muggle and magical songs. He started off the night with a muggle song called “Black Magic”.
That old black magic has me in it’s spell
That old black magic that you weave so well
The quartet watched transfixed as their professor started to pull the hand towards the dance floor. The long, elegant fingers gave way to a midnight black suit sleeve. It looked like whoever it was had on the same muggle tux that the rest of the men did. The sleeve brought into view a strong, muscular shoulder and that lead to the face of….
“Professor Snape!” Ron’s yell echoed in the hall, but the two professors paid him no heed. Professor Snape took the lead and twirled Professor McGonagall into his arms.
Icy fingers up
And down my spine
The same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine
Hermione just watched the two professors dance together, “Wow! They are actually quite good! Notice how fluidly they move together? Like they have been doing this for a long time and they each seem to be an extension of the other person.”
The same old tingle that I feel inside
When that elevator starts it’s ride
Down and down I go, round and round I go
Like a leaf that’s
Caught in the tide
Ron shot Hermione a disgusted look, “Can you please not mention Snape, McGonagall and fluid in the same sentence please?” Luna patted his arm consolingly.
Harry sat back and watched the two professors’ dance as well. They really did move in sync with each other. It was almost like they could anticipate every movement that the other would make. What Ron didn’t mention was the expression on their faces as they danced. Professor McGonagall stared at Professor Snape with this look of total adoration in her eyes. She was almost glowing with happiness. What truly shocked Harry was the look of devotion that Professor Snape had on his face - and could that expression be a smile?
I should stay away but what can I do
I hear your name, and I’m aflame
Aflame with
Such a burning desire
That only your kiss can put out the fire
Luna sighed as Professor Snape dipped Professor McGonagall and gave her a soft sweet kiss as he brought her back to her feet. If only she could get Ronald to dance with her like that. She let out a soft sigh - well, a girl can dream!
You are the lover that I’ve waited for
When the song hit the line talking about the lover worth waiting for, Ron almost lost his appetite at the grin and wink that Snape gave Professor McGonagall. “GAH! Don’t they know that there are people that need to eat here? How can they do that in public! I’m scarred! My brain will cease to function because that is killing my brain cells! Gah!!!!”
The mate that fate had me created for
And every time your lips meet mine
Hermione snorted, “Ron, I don’t know if you have any brain activity left in that head of yours. Sometimes you just don’t fire on all cylinders.” Luna again patted Ronald on the arm consolingly.
Ron shot a blank look at Hermione, “What is a cylinder?” With that, Harry and Hermione break down into giggles.
Baby down and down I go,
All around I go
In a spin, loving the spin that I’m in
Under that old black magic called love
As the song ended, Professor Snape pulled Professor McGonagall close to him holding her tight in a hug. He pulled back briefly and Hermione and Luna could see him whisper the words, “I love you.” The girls sighed as Professor Snape leaned in and gave her a kiss so soft and sweet that it melted their hearts. They turned to the boys and kissed their dates softly on the lips.
Luna sighed again as Professor Snape held Professor McGonagall close to him as they walked off the floor. “I only hope that when we are that old Ronald, that you will still love me with that passion and treat me with that much respect.”
Ron looked at Luna horrified, “Luna! EWWWWW. Passion? McGonagall? Snape? I need to go and scrub my eyeballs! GAH!” With that he ran out of the hall with Luna trailing after him thinking dreamily of the future.
Hermione snuggled into Harry’s arms and looked up at him, about to ask him a question. He silenced her with a soft kiss, “Yes, Hermione, I will love you with that much passion and devotion when we reach their ages, I promise.” She snuggled back down. “Good. That’s the way love is supposed to look,” she said.
He kissed the top of her head and looked over at the two Professors. Snape had Professor McGonagall held in his arms resting against his chest. Harry met Snape’s eyes and smiled at him and was shocked when Snape smiled back. “Yes, it is at that Hermione.”
