Lost Afterparty: Dr. Linus

Mar 09, 2010 23:59

Well, aside from being a bit weirded out that Sideways Ben is kind ME (European History FTW!) I decided to embrace my inner Benry-ness and the strange journey that is season 6 and go along for the ride.

Michael Emerson knocked it out of the park as usual - an emmy should be falling down for him right ... now. No? I'll wait. :-)

Anywho, Lost thoughts and such below. Enjoy!

But wait: links! Go here to check out a festive mini-Lost picspam and a recap of Lighthouse and Sundown.
And go here to check out my latest post on Lost and Alice and Wonderland. Craziness!

And now for the Afterparty.

All right, so this episode featured Michael Emerson being an acting god as usual, but it definitely brought up a few things that are bugging me this season. Good things first.

  • The conversation between Ben and Roger (!!) was EPIC! They were actually on the Island ya'll! Which means that my theory is true: Juliet totes blew up the Island in the sideways, logical verse and created the crazy Island world we know and love by detonating Jughead! What, what.
  • But question: was sideways Ben still shot on the Island? Did he not go to the temple? Are we seeing the bespeckled, sweater-vest wearing, teacher of the year that Ben could have become if Richard hadn't taken him on a temple field trip of innocence stealing in the 70s?
  • BEN AND HIS AWESOME STUDENT ALEX MADE ME TEARY
  • Sideways Ben and his Napoleon lecture and his friendship with the still-complaining Arzt? PRICELESS.
  • WIIIIDMOOOORE!! On the sub, coming to ur Island to eff things up. FTW!
  • Jacob is a manwhore. TRUE STORY. With all the touching. Yep.
  • EMO RICARDUS IS EMO. But still fun. And FABULOUS. He's too awesome to go 'splodey.

And now for some snarky ranting.

All right, I understand TV is a fantasy, stuff isn't always accurate (I watch CSI, where DNA tests are complete after a brief musical montage, so yeah), but I do expect Lost to occasionally fact-check, especially when said facts impact the logic of their story. So: THE ENTIRE PLOTLINE WITH ALEX AND HER RECOMMENDATION LETTER AND THE SMARMY PRINCIPLE WAS FREAKING DUMB, AND I'LL TELL YOU WHY.

First: AP exams in the US are typically in the spring, not the fall (and I am assuming it's September or October 2004 in the Sideways-verse) so Alex didn't need to be studying for a test yet. MAYBE SOME TIME-HOPPING SHENANIGANS ENSUED AGAIN, IDK. Minor quibble, but still.

Second: YOU DON'T READ YOUR RECOMMENDATION LETTERS NORMALLY, THAT'S WHY THOSE FORMS HAVE THE WAIVER AND WHATNOT, SO IT'S UNLIKELY IN THE EXTREME THAT ALEX WOULD HAVE READ PRINCIPLE MID-LIFE CRISIS'S GLOWING LETTER. Common sense, Damon, Carlton, and Polar Bear.

Third: Sideways Ben is seriously lacking in Manipulation and Scheming Skillz (which is why Island Ben will always come first in my heart). Uh, why didn't he just lie to Principle Smarmy Pants and get his ass fired anyway? And Principle ManWhore's threat wasn't even that great cause I'd imagine Yale would pay attention to Alex's ENTIRE application, not just a rec letter from some douchy alumnus. And why wasn't Dr. Linus writing her letter in the first place? HE HAS A PhD! And why is Dr. Linus teaching high school anyway? Maybe the Sideways-Verse is like Bizarro-Verse Academia or something. WEIRD STUFF IS WEIRD.

Also: can we plz off Illana already? I DON'T FREAKING CARE ABOUT THESE NEW LOSERS, WE HAVE ENOUGH CHARACTERS TO DEAL WITH SHOW. Gah. Sun gets like three lines and a hug montage scene and Illana gets all the good stuff with Ben? Come on!

Richard is immortal? Color me shocked show. I can't wait for the Richard episode - they better provide some awesome answers there. The dynamite scene with Jack was good though, and I love how even Richard isn't immune to Jack's Leadership Charisma. Snerk.

So all in all: Ben get a 12 out of 10, the episode itself gets a 6 or so. I HOPE TO BE DAZZLED NEXT WEEK. Though if they keep showing that commercial with Sawyer and Kate I might do some injury to myself or my TV. ;-)
