The summer is slowly dragging on. Have I mentioned how much I hate warm temperatures and humidity? I do. Very much so. This has been a hellacious summer weather-wise. Day upon day of high humidity (and off the charts dew points for this area) and 90 degrees or more. Yuck. It's the kind of weather that makes you not want to leave the house, so you can imagine my walking hasn't been going as well as I would hope. Kind of abandoned the afternoon walk. I cannot wait for fall to get here. Better weather, the trees are nicer, fewer cars around.
Job news- there is none. Nada. Did you hear it's a tough job market? It's true. Anyway, I'm not in a super hurry; although, the thought of central ac in a nice building is very appealing. I had 2 interviews with a publishing place about 30 minutes away. They even asked for references and it sounded like a nice job.... then, nothing. Granted, it's been just 1 week, but I figure if they like you then you hear from them in a shorter time span. The problem is that I had to tell the people I put as references and I'm getting emailed almost daily with questions about it- have I heard anything, blah blah and blah.
I've been watching tv (too much, but I blame the heat) and found some decent shows. I've managed to read some books too. Bjorn and I even ventured to Mystic, Connecticut for the long weekend. Um, no offense to those living there, but it sucked. I prefer North Conway, New Hampshire so much more. It reminded me of a ghetto (not Mystic, but where we stayed in New London) area. Loan places and fast food on every corner. Lots of police sirens. Not my ideal vacation. Plus, it was HOT and that is never a good thing.
I'm bored, so for those still reading who are also bored, here is a handy list of television shows that I love, like, and avoid like the plague.
True Blood: I LOVE this show. It is such a guilty pleasure. The stories are crazy, but it's such a fun show that you can overlook the crazy. Alexander Skarsgard is my celebrity crush. Sexy. And really, who doesn't love vampires? (Oddly enough, I do not watch Twilight or the new vampire shows- The Gates and Vampire Diaries). I tried to read the first book in the series, and it just wasn't written engagingly enough for me. Must say again- love, love, love this show.
Adventure Time: Ostensibly, this is aimed at children since it's a cartoon (and not a serious Anime/Manga). I said, ostensibly. It's fun. It's cute, and it's got stuff for the kids on the surface and stuff for the adults. The guy who does Bender's voice on Futurama is the dog. Now, whenever I watch Futurama, I think of Jake from this show. I think this is Bjorn's favorite of the summer.
Parenthood: Peter Krause. Peter Krause. Peter Krause. Enough said. Err, well it's actually a really good show. I think it's been picked up for next season. Lauren Graham is pretty good in it too. Kind of vanilla, but not a bad way to spend an hour.
Persons Unkown: Ugh. Yuck. Horrible show and premise. Bjorn and I sat through 10 minutes and our heads hurt. Pass on this one!
Rubicon: Another show we couldn't sit through. Pretentious. I hated it, and the fact that used 9/11 as a backstory. No thanks.
The Glades: I've only seen 1 episode, but I like it so far. It reminded me of Dexter and was a little daring. It also had a great twist that I never saw coming and I always see them coming so that impressed me. Going to wait and see, and since it's On Demand (yay!), I'll keep watching. The lead actor is cute too.
Haven: (Again, only 1 episode has aired). I was so pleasantly surprised by the first episode! I figured it'd be a cheesy show, but it reminded me a lot of Twin Peaks, and the acting was great. I love quirky shows like this (like Sanctuary and obviously True Blood) and I'm willing to give it a chance. I have the feeling that it will be my favorite show of the summer.
Breaking Bad: This just wrapped up. If you have never seen this show, I cannot urge you strongly enough to watch it. Just tremendous television. The writing is good, the acting is insanely good. There's a reason that Bryan Cranston has won 2 years in a row for Best Actor. Unfortunately, season 4 won't start until summer 2011. Boo. Hiss. Not cool, AMC.
Gravity: Well, this show was odd. Quirky, yes. But really odd. It's been canceled. Left on a cliff hanger, which I hate. The actress from Breaking Bad season 2 (Jane) was the lead. Not for everyone, it was about a suicide survivors group. Featured Rachel Hunter having sex with a 17 year old. Stuff like that.
Party Down: Shame on Starz for canceling this one. Hilarious. I will admit, season 1 with Jane Lynch (now on Glee) was funnier. The main character was kind of a downer this season; I read the actor left to be on Parks and Recreation. He's also in all of those ESPN Baseball Tonight commercials. First comedy in forever that made me laugh like a maniac though.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand: Wow. Violent. Lots of sex. Lucy Lawless is pure awesomeness. It was similar to the 300. The acting was great, as was the writing. I can't wait to see season 2!
Whale Wars: Save the whales. Some of it drags. Some makes you shake your head. It's horrible that people still hunt whales. I wish the Sea Shepherd group seemed more together- it's like everything they try is doomed to fail. Compelling concept for a reality show.
Supernatural: Tried to get into this show via re-runs on TNT and season 1. I like it, but.... the acting stinks. The writing is clever enough though. The pacing in the later episodes is great, however, season 1 dragged so much. I have stopped watching it on TNT now so it looks like I am done with this show!
And thus ends my epic, and somewhat useless, entry. Oh- if you like anime, then check out Death Note. It's awesome.
