First, I'm going to see The Arctic Monkeys and The Black Keys on Friday night!
Anyways, the purpose of this post: SPUFFY FEELS!!!!
When I first read the issue, my reaction was, "Well, that happened." I really had no feelings about the whole robot reveal. But as time went on, I kept thinking about things.
First, the robot thing: based off the future issue descriptions, I'm pretty sure this was Andrew's doing. I do not, however, think there was any nefarious purpose behind it. It was just very Andrew of him. He found out she was "with child" (because, let's face it, it's how he would refer to it all) and decides to be helpful. He makes a Buffybot and transfers real Buffy's consciousness into it, making her as life-like as possible but keep her and the baby safe. Because ANDREW WELLS 4 BABY DADDY and he's all about protecting baby Amidala. He had misguided but sweet intentions. I hope I'm not wrong about this. It would suck to make Andrew a villain again.
And now for the SPUFFY-OF-IT-ALL! Since we are sticking with my theory of it really being Buffy's mind, she was just classic Buffy. Having a hard time seeing what's in front of her face. In her mind, she really just thought Spike was around so he was helpful. I really think, especially withe previously seen flirty-ness at the end of S8 and even the beginning of S9 that she still has very strong feelings for him (I'll even say she's still in love with him) but she thought he didn't reciprocate so she tamped down how she felt. Because that's what she's always had to do, put her feelings on the back-burner because other things were going on.
Finding out he does, in fact, still love her, is in love with her, was a surprise. Because Buffy, not so much with the smarts sometimes. We don't adore her for her scholarly pursuits after all. As she says, she's really not good with the non-slaying stuff. She was even trying to talk him out of feeling anything for her. She really does believe anyone who loves her is doomed and because she loves him, she doesn't want him doomed. She lost him once, she doesn't want to do that again.
Spike, being Spike, just assumes she doesn't actually want him. Doesn't give her a chance to say what she feels or thinks. And as such will sacrifice his own happiness if he thinks she'll be better off without him. I dare say it's very Angel of him. (Would love to see someone point that out to him. He'd change his tune immediately I bet.) If the robot thing wouldn't have happens, I believe there would have been smoochies and I would have been doing this all day: \O/
Let's back up a bit to the conversation in the room as Buffy's moving in. Does the bug ship have more than one human bedroom? And if so, why would those rooms share closet space? Therefore, Buffy's in Spike's room. Yes? Yes. Domestic, Bickering Spuffy was adorable.
I mentioned way back when Issue #6 came out that Buffy was finding any way possible to make Spike the baby's father. If she really believed that he was, she would have kept the baby because she would know he would be there to help and support them.
Then, in this issue, Spike makes his "little slayer" quip. He would have loved to have a baby to take care of. As long as it was Buffy's, he wouldn't care who the father was ANDREW WELLS 4 BABY DADDY!. That being said, if it could have been his, that quip says to me, he want a girl. And he would be sure to make her a Daddy's girl and she would have him wrapped around her little finger even worse than her mother.
I won't go into my whole Spike and Love thing I've been thinking about just yet (that's a whole post of its own) but all this lends itself to my thoughts about him as a character and love.
All in all, I do believe Spike was talking to the real Buffy, just not face-to-face and that they are both still in love with each other. It would be nice to have them be a couple. A happy couple! Which, we all know is against all that Joss stands for. But they could be a couple and that would not have to be the centerpiece of the story. Just be a couple. They have enough problems with who they are. Let the have one part of themselves that is selfish and makes them happy.
