Convention 2008: Day 6

Aug 05, 2008 14:07

The End.

Right so, after a bit of sleep, I awoke to Jen almost completely packed. So, I got myself motivated and did the same. It only took three trips to the car, which for me, is impressive. Gentle had declared earlier in the week he would require beer (we are not allowed to drink while at Convention, which doesn't hurt me in the least) when everything was all said and done. So, we had time to kill before he was finished. We went down to the Ear office and hung out with the folks who hadn't left yet. Markowitz was taking Tyler (mine) to the airport and other people flitted in and out. Wayne let us know via text that Haag was completely passed out (we shouldn't drink, that doesn't mean some people don't find ways and our resident alcoholic, by his own admission, is one of those people). Wayne said he'd be down in five minutes to hang while his roommate recovered and that they would not be joining us for lunch. This made Audree happy as she really didn't want to spend anymore time with her ex (it wasn't a bad break-up, just a fresh one and therefore still hard) and could come with us.

Gentle came down and Jen asked Wayne where he was. This was about a half-hour later. He said they were packing and where were we having lunch? *headdesk*

We all say goodbye and head out. We ate at Mac & Joe's. The third time that week for Jen and me. It was nice decompression, as always. Haag, once again, set about saying how the business of JCL/SCL isn't really a business. That there's a lot of wasted potential (which there is) and wasted money (the SCL is incredibly rich and is a non-profit). And that folks that are not Latin teachers or chaperone's but still want to help in the SCL capacity should not have to pay for Convention People like me and now him. It's not the matter of money. He has plenty. But basically we are the workers and we are paying the same as those who are not workers. That isn't fair. I want to go to Convention but I have to pay $400 for the packet and travel costs. Next year we go to UC Davis, outside of Sacramento. Not cheap flying that. Anyways, after it was all talked out and agreed that we can't really do anything about it but rant, we headed off.

Audree hugged everyone but Wayne. It was kind of amusing. Haag will start working for a law firm in London in the fall. He will live in The City proper. And he said if we make it over there, we have a free trip to London. As is he'll put us up, take us out, so on. And I believe him. He really wants us to come visit. I've asked him to stalk David Tennant for me. Gave him the dates of Hamlet and all. He said he'd see what he could do. I love him. I truly do.

Of course, Jen and I were the last to say goodbye to each other, even though we followed each other down 27 until she had to exit on to 70. I had a 2 3/4 hour drive. She had a 5. I told her to call me if she needed to stay awake.

I made it home completely unscathed. No mystery bruises this year. The ones I got, I knew how I got them. They mystery of the arm rash was solved and taken care of. I have new Facebook friends and all my old ones. I adore these people and can't wait for Tampa.

Oh! About that. Yeah, there's nothing planned. Basically we are paying for our rooms (which should be on the beach) and a meal or two. That's it. No activities beyond really basic stuff. And so, being the rebels we are, there's a group of us that are thinking about planning our own reunion (because at $250, that's a good hotel rate and it's at least a meal). Still in Tampa because there are some folks that weren't at Convention that will be there and I have plans in the area after the 1st that can't (okay, I don't want to) change. We're thinking Busch Gardens, possible a Lightning game. We'll work it out.

So, I end my recap with this thought, the thought of the whole week by the SCL really: What the trash?!?!
