spicy records.
new records i picked up today:
the orchestra baobab has my favourite o.b. song on it: on verra ca! so glad to have that on vinyl now. there's a track on the ethiopian comp with melodies and rhythms that i recognize from the budos band's first album. i hadn't realized it was a cover (both versions are good but the original from ethiopia is better - it's got vocals! the instrumental parts are pretty similar). labelmates the daktaris also covered one of these tracks on their album (sounds pretty similar) and i had no idea about that either.
going record shopping felt funny cuz i haven't really done it in person in quite awhile (lotsa online ordering instead) and it felt a bit like looking at relics from an ancient past. due to the popularity of serato (and other similar programs), analogue is getting replaced by digital in the DJ world and this shows when you walk into record stores nowadays. since when would a record store be that quiet on a saturday afternoon? most people in there were looking at the production and DJ gear rather than the records. i've heard that one of the owners of one of the most popular toronto record stores for DJs guestimates that they probably have another 5 years left. i really like the idea of serato (no heavy record bag to lug around, access to more music without having to dig for it, financial accessibility once you've paid for the gear already.. expensive gear but once you have that, not having to buy records can save you a lot of money.. etc.) but there is something nice about holding a slab of wax in your hands after slipping it out of the sleeve, flipping it over to find a track on the other side, looking at the cover art, etc. and of course, you just can't beat that big, warm sound of vinyl.
that said, i'd be more interested in serato if i had a laptop which i don't = extra expense upfront.
on a totally unrelated note, i am learning that i can't really eat very spicy foods anymore if it's the kind of spice that burns down in your stomach (the kind of spice that just burns in the mouth is okay though). gives me a stomach ache now. sad. what causes that?
