Being a pre-nursing student, it's probably best of me to avoid self-medicating, but I can't help it.
With constant strep infections as a teenager and a genetic disposition, I have come to the conclusion that I do, in fact, have Psoriasis.
What is Psoriasis, you ask?
It's a genetic mutation in the immune system that causes the body to completely reproduce skin cells every 3-5 days instead of the average 28-29 days. This causes peeling finger and toe tips and pink sores/rashes (that almost look like fresh scars) to form on skin surfaces that would normally form callouses of skin folds such as the elbows, knees, and lower back. Only 8% of those diagnosed have a severe case (>10% of the body affected) and it can flare up do to stress, abrasions on the skin, or excessive alcohol abuse.
Why do you think I have this, you ask?
Just a few minutes ago, I had a mild itch in the swell of my back. When I carelessly rubbed it with my bitten off, peeling finger nails, it began to bleed uncontrollably. When I positioned my mirror to see exactly what was on me that had caused this distraction from my homework, I noticed a silvery, pink rash forming on the lower right side of my back. A rash that looks exactly like the ones my father, giver of half my genetic material, has on his lower back, elbows, and knees.
Awesome.. I guess this means no more tattoos.
