Hi there, FL

I've been able to pick up reading on DW and LJ lately, so I don't feel too embarrassed about starting to post again. Even when I don't have anything to say, I've enjoyed reading fandom posts and seeing that some people are still out there playing. It's a little bit like old times, although with a much smaller population. I know people have left for ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear you've had health problems. Glad to hear you're doing ok for the time being.

And congrats to your eldest!

I think it's hilarious. For the first two decades of her life, she insisted she didn't like taking care of kids. Her life-planning rarely included having children, although there was the memorable period around 7 years of age when she was going to be an airline pilot and live next door to me, so I could raise her kids while she was off doing more important things. When she got older, she refused all requests that she babysit.

She did a complete 180 her last years in college, and now is absolutely thrilled to spend all day teaching 6-year-olds in some of the crappiest schools in the country.

How very odd. I actually did babysit occasionally, but I've known since I was a teenager that I didn't want to have kids.

Good for her. Is she doing TFA, or just ended up there?

She started out in TFA and she's moving into a program that will not only help paying off her student loans, but pay for most of her Master's.

Meanwhile, her sister, who babysat a lot, taught little ones in martial arts when she was a teen, and has done child care for Work Study, enjoying all of it, is insisting that the last thing she wants to do with her life is teach.

It's very much not my call, and I don't mind what choices they make as long as they're good ones that keep them happy (and don't include the assumption that I will raise their kids while they're off frolicking). But it's a reminder that parenting is an unending series of surprises.
