The Omnivore's Hundred is an eclectic and entirely subjective list of 100 items that Andrew Wheeler, co-author of the British food blog Very Good Taste, thinks every omnivore should try at least once in his life.
He offered this list as the starting point for a game, along the following rules:
1. Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2. Bold all the items you’ve eaten
3. Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4. Optional extra: post a comment on Very Good Taste, linking to your results.
1. Venison
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare (I can't say I really enjoyed it...maybe I should have been slightly less adventurous and gone for one that was briefly pan-seared for my first try.)
5. Crocodile
6. Black pudding
7. Cheese fondue
8. Carp
9. Borscht
10. Baba ghanoush (I'm not a fan)
11. Calamari
12. Phở
13. PB&J sandwich
14. Aloo gobi - maybe? I probably would never have ordered this for myself, because cauliflower doesn't really set me on fire; but I wouldn't refuse it if it were offered at a party or buffet or some other occasion...
15. Hot dog from a street cart - maybe I think I have...I've at least had hot dogs before, on some very rare occasions. I'm not entirely sure I've had one from a street cart...
16. Epoisses (not knowingly, but I have consumed a lot of cheese, and it's not uncommon for me to eat cheese whose name and origin I do not know...)
17. Black truffle
18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes
19. Steamed pork buns (These are those dumpling things, right?)
20. Pistachio ice cream
21. Heirloom tomatoes
22. Fresh wild berries
23. Foie gras
24. Rice and beans
25. Brawn, or head cheese (It's quite possible I have, but I tend to get all those pate-like things confused.)
26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper (I don't know if I could handle this, but perhaps someday I'll be up for the challenge of taking the teensiest nibble. As long as I'm assured beforehand that that won't ruin my ability to taste anything ever again...)
27. Dulce de leche (though I've had dulce de leche flavoured ice cream!)
28. Oysters
29. Baklava (mmm, I miss Vanessa's baklava...)
30. Bagna cauda
31. Wasabi peas
32. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl (mmm...)
33. Salted lassi
34. Sauerkraut (not a fan)
35. Root beer float (I doubt I will ever want to try one, given my reservations about sodas that are outside of the citrus fruit or just plain water categories)
36. Cognac with a fat cigar
37. Clotted cream tea (At first I thought this referred to something like putting clotted cream in your tea, which sounds disgusting, but now I gather that 'tea' here refers to the meal, not the drink. I have had tea (the meal) with scones and clotted cream, so I guess it's a yes for this one?
38. Vodka jelly/Jell-O
39. Gumbo
40. Oxtail - maybe I tried something that might have been oxtail bone marrow at a restaurant in Seattle, but maybe it was some other kind of bone marrow...
41. Curried goat
42. Whole insects
43. Phaal (Vindaloo is already getting to be on the hot side for me, but I would certainly like to at least try Phaal...and it sounds like a
good challenge for someone I know.)
44. Goat’s milk (I've had lots of things made with goat's milk, but not the stuff itself - as I recall - since I dislike straight milk in general.)
45. Malt whisky from a bottle worth £60/€80/$120 or more (I would try this, but certainly wouldn't spend that kind of money on a bottle for myself.)
46. Fugu (
sounds scary)
47. Chicken tikka masala
48. Eel
49. Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut
50. Sea urchin
51. Prickly pear
52. Umeboshi
53. Abalone
54. Paneer
55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal (I believe I once had a hamburger - and probably fries, too - from either a McDonald's or a Burger King, but I wouldn't have ordered the meal as I don't like much soda.)
56. Spaetzle
57. Dirty gin martini
58. Beer above 8% ABV (no idea...I've only ever had sips of other people's beer, or beer in some adulterated form - laguer and lime, demi-peche - so who knows...)
59. Poutine (I've heard mixed things about poutine from friends...probably more on the negative side, but some day I'll try it.)
60. Carob chips (Clara, what were those cookies your mum used to make?)
61. S’mores
62. Sweetbreads
63. Kaolin (I have a face mask that contains kaolin clay, I think, but I don't know what the edible form of this is...)
64. Currywurst
65. Durian (not real excited to try this one, from what I've heard...)
66. Frogs’ legs (actually, now that I think about it, I don't think I've had cuisses de grenouilles...I should remedy that)
67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake
68. Haggis
69. Fried plantain
70. Chitterlings, or andouillette (Once, in one of the university cafeterias in paris...I didn't realise what it was, and didn't find out til afterwards when my French companions commented on my bravery.)
71. Gazpacho (I may have tried some at some point, but I'm not crazy about the idea of cold soup.)
72. Caviar and blini (Oh, how many blini I had from kiosks in St. Petersburg...but they were blini filled with cheese or jam or mushrooms, not fancy blini accompanying caviar.)
73. Louche absinthe (I have no idea what 'louche' is, but I have had absinthe.)
74. Gjetost, or brunost (Derya gave me some once...despite my Norwegian roots and my general enthusiasm for cheese, I did not love it.)
75. Roadkill (why the hell is this on this list?)
76. Baijiu
77. Hostess Fruit Pie (I mean, I would try it if I really had to, but once in middle school I bought one of those packages of two hostess cupcakes, and it was gross and I was sick afterwards.)
78. Snail
79. Lapsang souchong
80. Bellini (don't think I have had one, but it sounds delicious)
81. Tom yum (I don't remember whether it was this or something very similar that I ordered my first time having Thai food...)
82. Eggs Benedict
83. Pocky
84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant (nope, don't think so, but I did once have the tasting menu at a fancy Moroccan restaurant in SF, for a friend's birthday)
85. Kobe beef
86. Hare (I did once have rabbit, and did not like it.)
87. Goulash
88. Flowers (once, a favourite afternoon snack for my former next door neighbour and me)
89. Horse
90. Criollo chocolate
91. Spam (I suppose I would try it if forced to.)
92. Soft shell crab (nope - only had the kind which involves messily picking the meat out of the shell, and jumping up to wash your hands every other minute, so as not to develop a nasty rash.)
93. Rose harissa
94. Catfish
95. Mole poblano
96. Bagel and lox
97. Lobster Thermidor
98. Polenta
99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee (This isn't the shit coffee i heard about on NPR a few months ago, is it? If so, not so sure I'd want to try it...)
100. Snake
