Got Milk?

No, not the beverage.  The movie - Milk with Sean Penn and Emile Hirsch...and Lucas Grabeel, oddly enough....And what I mean by "got" was "watched."

I don't usually give reviews, but I feel the need.  This movie was inspiring.  It made me cry, and laugh, and cry out with surprise (there's more sex in it than I expected, and not the straight kind), and feel like there is hope.  I'm a huge gay rights activist, and I'm so glad that this movie has come out.  If you haven't watched it, do it.  Go out as soon as you can and rent it.  Watch it.  It's amazing.

I suggest not finding out the ending before you watch, because if you do, the shock and grief are less intense.  Not that it isn't obvious from the beginning what's going to happen in the end.

This movie made me wish I lived in this time period, in the late seventies, so I could be a part of this important movement, but then I realized that the fight is going on today, too.  But today, we're not fighting for gay people to be allowed to work in schools with children, we're fighting to allow them to marry.  I am so proud that my state was one of the first to do so.  Let's just hope there isn't another Prop 8.  The funny thing is, in this movie, they were fighting Prop 6...ironic, no?

But anyway, let me just tell you, you should watch this movie.  The cast is fresh and talented, the emotions are palpable, and by the end, you will be standing up and cheering right along with the characters.  But don't just watch it because it's a good, well-made movie.  And it is.  Watch it because the fight for gay civil rights is ever-present.  And watch it because maybe, someday, in the next a hundred years or so, we'll have an openly gay president.  Watch it because gay people are still ostracized for who they love and watch it because you probably know someone who's LGBT.  Watch it because why on earth would anyone choose to treated like this?

One can only hope.  Right?
