Sorry this one is so late (technically it's the 18th already here!)! It took me longer to finish it up than I thought because I decided the original cover art sucked royally.
A long time ago, just for the hell of it, I wrote a one shot where Ryan Atwood was a genuis and got recruited to live in Eureka. Last year, for my 24 Gifts Of 2007, I added Stargate: Atlantis to the mix by having Ryan get hired from Eureka to work on Atlantis. Then came the idea that Ryan once travelled with The Doctor for a time, which evolved first into a story where Ryan helped Torchwood out, and then into one where Ryan and his Atlantis teammates run into The Doctor and Rose in the Pegasus Galaxy.
This mix tells a story, from the point following Ryan's first meeting Captain Jack Harkness (I promise, I WILL write that story someday!) and then his adventures with The Doctor, Rose, and Jack, and finally a little about Atlantis and how he relates it to his days as one of The Doctor's Companions. Hopefully it makes sense as a narrative.

Matchbox Twenty - UnwellRyan Atwood finally goes back to work at Global Dynamics following a year of avoiding the place after the explosion and temporary rift incident that led to him meeting Captain Jack Harkness, but it's hard being in the same labs where he almost died and where he saw the people he cared about die in the alternate realities he kept jumping through. He's trying to keep his cool, but it's getting to him and he's beginning to wonder if maybe he should just leave Eureka for good, especially when he has a panic attack while walking by the exact lab it all began in. The worst of it is, everyone is busy and seems to be missing the problem. So when Jack calls and asks for help with a computer problem, Ryan volunteers to go to Cardiff for what he thinks will be nice and relaxing vacation of sorts. Ha!

Lit - Over My HeadWhile working on fixing Torchwood's computer problems, Ryan finds out through a call home that he may lose his lab priveliges at Global because of his panic attack and how he just took off without getting it properly cleared. Allison is fighting them on it, but it's iffy. Right about then, Jack's friends, The Doctor and Rose Tyler, arrive to visit Jack, and an offer of an adventure is given to Jack, and to Ryan, who Jack insists will love it. And the second Ryan sees the inside of the Tardis, he's pretty sure he will. The odd thing is, as soon as the Tardis' engines start up, Ryan can almost feel something coursing through his blood, and he feels like he belongs in a way he never had before, not even in Eureka.

TaTu - 30 MinutesOf course, Ryan doesn't know that adventures with The Doctor tend to, inevitably, go horribly wrong most of the time, and soon he winds up in big trouble along side the others. They discover a group of Humans enslaved by the Slytheen, and Ryan has the chance to walk away and avoid becoming involved in anything dangerous, but he knows he couldn't live with himself if he did, so instead he stands with the others and rigs makeshift bombs to cause distractions and allow the humans time to escape. The shock of knowing he's killed people (well... Slytheen...) is enough to shake him from his former numbness.

Peter Gabriel - I GrieveInitially, Ryan's friends don't understand why he breaks down after the destruction of the Slytheen ship. Yes, it's a huge loss of life, but they were evil life. Then Jack realizes it has nothing to do with the Slytheen, and everything to do with the repeated deaths Ryan witnessed in the alternate realities, and especially the fact that Ryan had to kill someone in two different realities in order to protect himself. Jack sits beside Ryan, letting his presence give his message of comfort rather than words. After a moment, Rose joins them and takes one of Ryan's hands between her own, and The Doctor takes them all to a peaceful, mostly empty, world, then coaxes them all outside into the bright blue sunlight. Ryan gathers his strength from his friends, and feels his spirit mend just a bit as he watches Rose try to build a Sand Castle by hand, The Doctor cheat by piling sand then using the Sonic Screwdriver to remove everything he doesn't want, and Jack strip down to go swimming.

Bon Jovi - Dead Or AliveIt's half funny, half terrifying, that on the next world they visit, they discover the whole group is now wanted by the Slytheen for mass murder. The Doctor's form of 'comfort' is to tell Ryan that he himself is wanted for various crimes on a couple hundred worlds, and Rose tells him that at least no one really takes the Slytheen seriously, not even their own people. Jack tells him that if he's lucky, he'll live long enough to be wanted on a couple more worlds, and Ryan throws up his hands and asks in a resigned tone what sort of trouble the Doctor's going to drag them into now, and the group sets out to see what they find.

Acceptance - DifferentRyan knew the first time he met The Doctor and Rose that they were clearly one of those 'non-couple couples', not officially together, but clearly meant to be together. So he tried not to let himself fall for Rose, but after a couple adventures, it got hard. He knew it was hopeless, she was clearly in love with The Doctor, but he couldn't help wishing that he could be what she wanted. He was pretty sure that if The Doctor wasn't in the picture, he'd stand a chance, but he wasn't about to get in the middle of that non-relationship, so when it got too hard to avoid, he asked The Doctor to take him home to Eureka. And when he got home, he found himself able to not only walk into Global without a problem, but work in the old lab that had nearly torn him apart just a few months earlier.

Kristina Sa - Mad WorldEureka was exactly the same, but Ryan felt like he was seeing it with new eyes. These same people he'd known since he was 15, were the ones who would find a way to lead humanity into the stars, and beyond, someday. But it was painful when he saw them making the assumptions and mistakes that he knew would lead them to trouble down the road, trouble like trusting the Slytheen. So he did the best he could to slowly guide them with the knowledge he had, always hoping that Eureka would do good and maybe stop some of the not so great parts of the future. The hardest part, though, was knowing there was more out there, and knowing he might never experience the Universe again.

Evanescence - My Immortal (Early Demo Version)Ryan knows he'll never have the time to see a tenth of what Captain Jack and The Doctor have seen, and will still se someday. As the years pass, there are days when he wishes he had never met either of them, and there are days he wishes that he'd had the strength to stay out there, seeing the Universe and all it had to offer. He wishes he'd at least stayed long enough to find out why the Tardis and that distant crystaline City liked him so much, and he wishes he could forget what he saw because life on Earth, even in Eureka with it's constant 'events', was simply boring now. Those two Immortal men, one a Time Lord and one... god only knows... had changed him somehow.
09.
Styx - Come Sail AwayHe's 24 when he finally understands The Doctor's last words to him, a cryptic suggestion that when a man named Dr. Rodney McKay comes to offer him a job, he should say yes because he'll never regret it. When Ryan sits in the mess hall on the Daedelus, heading for Atlantis, he can almost close his eyes and pretend he's on the Tardis again, waiting for The Doctor to tell them some silly little story about the world they're going to, or Jack to flirt with The Doctor and/or Rose, or Rose to grab his hand and ask for a Eureka!Story to entertain them during the trip. The Daedelus and later Atlantis, the crystaline City that's owners had wanted to keep he and Jack so much, weren't quite the same as The Tardis and it's occupants, but it was close enough to prove The Doctor right. He could belong there, like he had so briefly felt like he did on the Tardis, and that was enough.

Electrasy - Cosmic CastawayRyan figured it out eventually, after a brief return to Earth left him feeling completely lost and empty. He was meant to be out there, among the stars and the other cultures and the strange aliens and the adventure. He still called Eureka home, because how can you call the entire Universe home, but he felt most at peace if he was surrounded by the stars in a Puddlejumper, or by the calming presence of Atlantis. Others in the City thought he was an adrenaline junkie, and Lorne and Cadman sometimes looked at him like they were worried, but it was knowing he was doing something good, something that would make The Doctor, Rose, and Captain Jack, wherever they might be at that very moment, proud of him, that really did it. And when he saw The Doctor and Rose again, on a backwater planet in Pegasus, he pretended to be annoyed and reluctant, but there was nothing that would make him turn away from the chance to travel, however briefly, with them again. And the moment he set foot on the Tardis, the moment he felt it's soft purr beneath his fingers, he knew he was home.
