Partially written yesterday, then rewritten slightly to include what is actually a VERY minor spoiler for tonight Season Premiere of Eureka. It's nothing mind shattering spoiler-y, just something that was a relatively minor part of the story, and actually this ignores a LARGE portion of the main plot of the episode. Basically, assume status quo is maintained from some point last season (Beverly has been busted as a bad guy, Henry hasn't been arrested for anything, NO Alison/Stark ickiness because Jack/Alison FTW! lol), and not for any of the major changes from the season opener, just one small Zoe related thing... lol
Assume this to take place in the time frame of Season 3, though, so Zoe and Ryan are both almost 17.
"You are the worst waitress ever," Ryan said in amusement as Zoe dropped the bus tub on the counter beside him and glared.
"Shut up," she muttered.
"Zoe, it's simple, never go anywhere empty handed," Ryan advised. "If you're coming out here, bring plates, or napkins, or filled salt shakers. If you're going in back, take dirty dishes, empty salt shakers, something, back. It's more efficient and makes less work for you in the long run."
"Can I hire you?" Vincent asked wistfully.
"Sorry, I'm busy with the project team Stark put me on," Ryan said. "Dr. Mitchell is really close to something. I'm sure that today we'll either get positive results, or... we'll blow a hole int he wall of the lab and I'll get a week off." He got up and passed his ID card to Vincent to swipe, then grabbed his bag. "I'll see you later, Zo. Try to stay out of trouble, okay?"
"Great, you're starting to sound like my dad," Zoe said, rolling her eyes.

"Dr. Mitchell, power levels are spiking," Ryan called as he monitored the results. "Approaching critical."
"Systems will hold," Dr. Mitchell said excitedly. "We're about to have a breakthrough, my boy!"
"Or break through the lab wall," Ryan replied as a high pitched whine filled the air. "We're in the red and it's still climbing!" he yelled. "Loosing integrety, containment failing!"
"Something's wrong!" Dr. Mitchell yelled. "What is that?"
Ryan's gaze snapped up from the computer screen to the observation window, and he jumped to his feet as he saw the shimmering gash in the air of the other room. "Oh my god..." he whispered, unable to step away and fighting the urge to step closer. Finally, he lost the battle and moved closer to the glass, watching in awe as the gash grew longer and widened more. He gasped as he saw something that looked humanoid on the other side of the rip, then everything went white and squeezed his eyes shut against it. When it seemed like it couldn't get any brighter, his body suddenly felt like ti was burning and he heard a gutteral scream tear loose from Dr. Mitchell.
Then, suddenly and mercifully, everything went quiet, still, dark.

Jack walked into Cafe Diem, watching as Zoe wiped down the counter, smiling as Vincent told her she hadn't done that bad, better than her first day had gone, and he took a deep breath to prepare himself, wishing there was a way to prepare Zoe for the news. When he stepped up to the counter, Zoe looked up, smiling, then looked around for Ryan, who had been suppose to get a ride from Global to the diner with her dad.
"Forget someone?" Zoe asked.
"No, Zoe, I didn't," Jack said. "There was an accident at the lab Ryan was working at."
Zoe's entire face fell. "He's okay, right?"
Jack shook his heard, moving around the counter so he could pull his daughter into his arms as he told her. "He didn't make it."
"No," Zoe whimpered, shaking her head in denial. "No..."
"Ryan's..." Vincent began, stunned.
"He's... gone," Jack said, not telling them how true it was. Not wanting his daughter to know that Ryan's body had been destroyed by the explosion, and Dr. Mitchell's charred as the man had desperately tried to get the doors open against the emergency protocals.

Ryan opened his eyes, then squeezed them shut again against the harsh overheard lighting, though it wasn't as painful as the light in the lab had been. After a moment, Ryan slowly blinked his eyes open, frowning momentarily before he recognized the quiet sounds of the G.D. infirmary. He pushed himself up on his elbows and looked around, head spinning, and trying to figure out what felt off about the room compared to his last check up just a week before.
"He's awake!" a nurse called as she stood in the open curtain.
Ryan frowned, not recognizing the woman, but relaxed slightly as Alison came in, followed by Stark and Jack. "Is Dr. Mitchell alright? He was further away, but he's always complaining about his heart palpitations..."
"Why don't we start with who you are," Jack said.
"What?" Ryan said. "Sheriff, it's me, Ryan. Zoe's best friend?"
"Who's Zoe?" Stark asked.
Jack had gone pale, though, and gripped the curtain in one hand. "How do you know my daughter's name?"
"She's my best friend," Ryan replied. "Has been since we met my first day in town..."
"My daughter died three years ago, and she sure as hell never came to Eureka," Jack said. "Who the hell are you?"
Ryan stared at him, confused. "Sheriff, I saw Zoe this morning, I teased her about being a lousy a waitress..."
"Stop it," Jack said.
Ryan patted his pocket, but his handheld was gone. "I had a PDA, if you give it to me, I can prove it."
"We're not handing over anything," Stark said, pulling out the PDA. "Where?"
"Open the file marked 'Family'," Ryan said. "There's a million pictures of Zoe on there."
"Blonde? And... red head?" Stark asked. "And is that plaid?"
Jack took the PDA, staring for a moment and moving through the photos, including a few ofZoe and Jo, and Zoe and Ryan. "Oh my God... that's her."
"I don't know what happened, but one minute I'm working with Dr. Mitchell, the next the experiment is overloading and... and I'm here."
"Not that I believe you," Stark began. "But what was the experiment?"
"We were trying to tap into a new energy source," Ryan said. "And then... the levels spiked, and there was... it was like a rip, right through the air."
"Dr. Oliver was working on a project involving sub atomic energy," Stark said. "I think we may have had a bigger accident than we thought."
End Of Snippet
I have a vague idea of where this could go, but... this is what I have right now...
expect angst, lots of it... and bouncing between the 'real' world where Ryan and Zoe are best friends, and the alternate(s) where things are different... lol...
