On The Road
Brooke smiled as she watched Ryan double check to make sure that Flapjacks and Pancakes were secure in the middle of the back seat of the rented rover they were taking up to the mountains. All of a sudden, the thought popped into her heard that Ryan was going to be a great dad when they had kids, and it scared the hell out of her. Not Ryan being a dad, because she knew he would be great at it, but a mix of being a mom herself and the fact that they'd only been dating a couple months and she was thinking kids. If Ryan knew, he'd probably panic and dump her in a second.
"What's wrong?" Ryan asked, looking up with a concerned frown on his face.
"Nothing," Brooke replied, smiling.
"Don't we have a deal about lies?" Ryan asked quietly, hurt flashing across his features.
"I just... this stupid thought popped into my head, and... it's... I shouldn't be thinking it."
Ryan quirked an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth twitching up. "Kinky thoughts?" he asked hopefully.
Brooke laughed and balled up her scarf to throw it at him. "No!"
"Then what?"
Brooke hesitated, then took a deep breath and closed her eyes to answer. "That you're going to be an amazing dad someday," she said in a rush.
"Okay..." Ryan said. "And that upset you?"
"Because... when I thought that, I also kinda thought that it might be our kids... and I freaked because the idea of me being a mom terrifies me, and we haven't been together that long so I thought you might freak out that I thought about it..."
"Brooke," Ryan said, gesturing for her to climb into the rover and close the door while he did the same on the other side. "Every girl I've ever dated, I've thought about whether I'd want to have kids with her. I've thought about the pros and the cons of them as moms. Usually I end up with a hell of a lot more cons, because until you my taste in girlfriends was seriously fucked up."
"Until me?" Brooke echoed.
Ryan reached over the carriers to cradle her face in his hands. "I have yet to come up with a single con about you and me having kids," he whispered. "Yeah, I don't exactly wanna start now, I'd prefer to finish college and get a career going so that my kids never have to live like I did, but... even if next week you came to me and told me you were pregnant, I'd be scared but I'd be happy, too. I want to have kids with you."
Then the doors swung up and Kaitlin and Summer stared in at them from opposite side. "You two weren't about to traumatize Pancakes and Flapjacks were you?" Summer asked.
Ryan rolled his eyes and got out his side while Brooke snickered and climbed out hers. "We were just talking," Ryan said. "You guys ready?"
"Mom said I could ride with you guys if it was okay," Kaitlin said hopefully.
"Fine with me," Brooke said.
"Let's see, my annoying almost sister, or my idiot jackass brother?" Ryan asked, giving her a look that clearly said it was the stupidest question he'd ever heard.
"Shut up," Kaitlin said, climbing in and leaning over to see to the rabbits.
"Sweet," Ryan muttered under his breath as he moved around the front of the rover to talk to Sandy, who was finishing up packing the other Rover. "I'm following you guys, right?" he asked.
Back in the rented rover, Kaitlin and Summer leaned forward from their seats in back to regard Brooke. "So, what were you talking about?" Kaitlin asked.
"Just... stuff," Brooke said evasively as she reached for her CDs. "So, you ever heard the Friends With Benefit CD?" she asked, holding up the case. "I know a couple of the artists..."
"You do?" Kaitlin asked. "Who?"
"Stop asking questions and maybe I'll tell you," Brooke said.
Ryan opened the driver's side door and put the map on the dash. "Buckle up, guys," he said as he slid in.
"Have you gotten the chance to truly experience Ryan's nazi-ness with the seat belts rule?" Summer asked, rolling her eyes.
"No seat belts is a good way to get hurt or..." Ryan began, then stopped, swallowing convulsively before continuing. "Or killed."
"My sister died because she wasn't wearing one," Kaitlin explained for Brooke's sake.
"I know," Brooke said, turning to look at her and smiling sadly. "Ryan told me about Marissa."
"Did he tell you she could be a cheating whore sometimes?" Kaitlin said. "I love her and still miss her, but you're much better for him."
"Can we stop discussing how bad of taste I used to have in girlfriends?" Ryan asked.
"Lindsay wasn't so bad," Summer teased.
"Except for being Kirsten's half-sister," Kaitlin pointed out.
"And Sadie was great," Summer continued, glancing at Kaitlin for the punch line.
"Except her cousin tried to steal your girlfriend," Kaitlin said.
"And Theresa was..."
"Stop teasing him or you don't get to find out what famous people I know," Brooke said, waving the CD at them.
"I'll be good," Kaitlin said immediately.
"I won't," Summer said.
"Fine, be nice or I'll make sure the only room for you to take is the one right next to Seth and Taylor," Brooke threatened with a grin.
"Your girlfriend's evil," Summer said, laughing, as she sat back in her seat.
Brooke put in the CD and hit play. "And for the record, I know Haley James, Chris Keller, and Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy."
"Finally, you get a cool girlfriend," Kaitlin said to Ryan, who just rolled his eyes.
~~~
"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Kaitlin chanted in the back seat while Ryan ground his teeth and Summer and Brooke tried not to laugh.
"If you don't stop, I'm gonna..." Ryan began.
"Turn around and take me home?" Kaitlin mocked. "Are we there yet?"
"You are so dead," Ryan muttered. "I'm going to shove you into a snow drift, Kaitlin."
"No you won't, it would mess up my cast," Kaitlin said with a smirk.
"Fine, I'll just tell Julie how exactly you paid for your trip from school to Newport that time," Ryan said, glancing at her in the rearview mirror. "And Julie and my parents about how exactly Seth got the pot during senior year?"
"You knew that was me?"
"Cohen so can't keep secrets," Summer said.
"Besides, I know the smell of pot, Kaitlin, and your clothes smelled like pot," Ryan said.
"How exactly do you know?" Kaitlin asked.
Ryan snorted. "I used to light up with Trey, Eddie, Arturo, their girlfriends, and occasionally Theresa," he said. "I outgrew it by 15 though."
"Right around the time I did, too," Summer said. "Pot is so junior high."
"Compared to you three, I'm a freaking saint!" Brooke said, looking between them. "And I'm the girl who once made a sex tape!"
"You what?!" Ryan said, hitting the brakes.
"Jeeze, Ryan!" Kaitlin yelled.
"Seriously?" Summer asked Brooke.
"The guy was suppose to erase it right after, but instead he kept it by accident and it got shown at a party," Brooke said. "Where his wife was in attendance."
"His WIFE?!" Summer and Kaitlin said together.
"You had sex with a married guy?" Ryan said.
"It was before they even knew eachother," Brooke said. "And we were both really drunk."
Ryan just turned to stare straight ahead, then slowly started forward again. "I really could have done without knowing about that," he said.
"Sorry," Brooke said quietly.
Ryan sighed as his phone rang just as he reached the turn off for the Lake Morgan Lodge driveway. They were so close, and with so little traffic, he felt it was safe to answer it himself. "We're pulling in now," he said after glancing at the display.
"Is everything okay?" Sandy asked.
"Yeah, it's fine," Ryan said with a sigh as he pulled in beside the other rover.
The End
Oh, the angst... poor Brooke... Ryan's not being a jerk though! He's just surprised! And distressed that he didn't know this and had to find out with Summer and Kaitlin in the car... Don't worry, Ryan and Brooke will talk and work it out, I promise...
