Another in the Four Brothers Universe. This one is another flashback, and contains Lucky explaining Chrismukkah's origins to Ryan... I did decide, you'll see, about whether Sandy exists in this universe... lol
(Lucky is 17, Jess is 14, Nathan is 11, and Ryan is 8)
"It's Chrismukkah," Lucky explained as Ryan stared in confusion at the mixed up decoraions in the living room.
"Bless you?" Ryan replied uncertainly, looking up at him.
Lucky chuckled and crouched down beside his new little brother to explain. "You know Ma's jewish, right?" When Ryan nodded, Lucky continued. "Well, I'm not actually Ma's oldest, she has a biological son, Sandy, who left home not long after Ma adopted me. He ran off to California and married a nice blonde Christian named Kirsten, and they have a son, Seth, who's just about your age. Anyway, Seth decided that it was weird celebrating two seperate holidays, Hannukah for the Jewish side and Christmas for the Christian side, so he mashed them together into Chrismukkah. 8 days of presents followed by one day of many presents. Well, when me and Jess got wind of this, we asked Ma if we could do the same, since me and him both came from families that celebrated Christmas. We talked her into it by saying that it was a way for us to learn about Hannukah and her to learn about what we grew up with. Now it's just tradition."
"That's..."
"Really weird?" Jess suggested as he walked by and dropped down onto the couch. "Yeah, well, that's Seth for you. He's a weird kid."
"He's a little... odd," Lucky admitted.
"He's a freak," Nathan piped up from where he was trying to stretch a garland across the fireplace mantel.
"Don't call our nephew a freak," Lucky admonished.
"He's obsessed with comic books," Nathan said.
"He barely reads anything of actual quality, because superheroes are more important," Jess added, rolling his eyes and going back to his own book, which to Ryan's eyes looked impossibly long and probably boring.
"There's nothing wrong with liking superheroes," Lucky said, glaring at Jess before looking back at Ryan. "But it's a better idea to mix it in with actual books."
"I'll make you a deal, Ry," Jess said, looking up again. "For every actual book you read, and because you're still little for now I'll count those crappy kid books that are 'age appropriate', I'll buy you a candy bar. Or give you a couple bucks in quarters for the video games at the 7-11."
"Okay," Ryan said, grinning the second Jess had looked away and leaning over to whisper to Lucky. "I can read more than he thinks," he said.
Lucky grinned and ruffled Ryan's hair. "Wanna come with me to pick out a tree?"
"Really?" Ryan asked.
"Sure," Lucky said. "We'll get the best one on the lot."
Nathan snorted. "We never get the best one, they cost too much," he said.
"Ignore him he just likes to complain about stuff," Lucky said. "Go get on your shoes and jacket, okay?"
"Okay," Ryan said, running back upstairs.
Lucky straightened and went over to smack the back of Nathan's head. "It's his first Chrismukkah with us, we're getting the best tree on the lot," he said.
"Here's my part," Jess said, holding out some folded bills.
"Add that to mine and Ma's, we're getting the best," Lucky said with a smirk aimed at Nathan.
"But..."
"Didn't you ever notice that the tree we got your first year was better than the ones we've gotten since?" Jess said, annoyed. "Me and Lucky saved up to get a perfect one to welcome our new brother. We did the same now for Ryan."
"Why didn't you tell me? I woulda saved, too..."
"No, you wouldn't have," Lucky and Jess said at the same time, rolling their eyes.
"I'm ready," Ryan said as he returned, shoes on and tugging on his jacket, eyes wide and excited.
"Then let's go," Lucky agreed, taking Ryan's hand. "We'll be back in a little while, keep an eye on nate, alright, Jess?"
"Yeah, yeah," Jess replied.
"And no tying him to a chair with the garland," Lucky added.
"Why do you have to ruin all the fun stuff?" Jess replied, grinning.
