1.

Ryan woke to someone kicking him and calling his name angrily, so when he opened his eyes to look up at Summer he was ready to snap that he hadn't done anything, despite whatever she was hallucinating this time. "What?" he growled.

"Geeze, love you, too, Chino!" Summer replied, as she flopped down beside him, grinning like a maniac.

"Summer, it's 5 in the morning, and I was working late last night," Ryan mumbled. "I'm tired and you just woke me up by kicking me. What do you expect?"

"I'm not hearing the magic words," Summer siad.

Ryan smiled despite himself. "I love you, Summer."

"Much better," Summer said, leaning over to kiss him. "I've got news."

"What kind of news?"

"The best kind."

"And that means what, exactly?" Ryan asked as he propped himself up on his elbows to regard her.

"Daddy called you, and I quote, an incredibly responsible young man who's going to make a lucky girl very happy someday," Summer said excitedly. "Isn't that great?"

"It would be better if he knew we've been dating for a couple months," Ryan replied.

"He kinda does," Summer said. "When he said that, I kinda told him about us."

Ryan's eyes widened slightly. "You did?"

"Yup," Summer said. "Ry, he's happy for us! He says he knows he can trust you to always watch out for me, and... and he's really happy for us!"

"Okay," Ryan said, taking a deep breath and letting it out. "Wow."

"Is that all you're going to say?"

"Summer, I'll repeat, it's 5am and I worked late. My brain isn't functioning again yet. Give me a couple minutes to process this, and at least one cup of coffee, then I'll get back to you."

"How about something else to wake you up?" Summer said, raising an eyebrow. "Something involving both of us and a lot less clothes?"

Ryan couldn't help grinning. "That could work."

"Goodie," Summer said, leaning in to kiss him again.

Ryan woke to someone kicking him and calling his name angrily, so when he opened his eyes to look up at Summer he was ready to snap that he hadn't done anything, despite whatever she was hallucinating this time. Instead he saw the totally amazed look on her face and he propped himself up on oen elbow to look at her. "What's wrong, baby?"

Summer just bit her lip and smiled as she grabbed Ryan's hand, knocking him over since it was the arm supporting his weight, and planted it firmly on her slightly portruding stomach. After a moment, she grinned and squealed excitedly, and Ryan couldn't help smiling in return as he felt the flutter of movement under his hand.

"Our baby's kicking," he whispered in wonder.

"It's the first time I've felt it!" Summer said, moving his hand just as another kick came. "Chino, our baby's kicking!"

Ryan smiled and leaned over to kiss Summer lightly on the lips. "Yeah, our baby is." Then he bent down and gently tugged Summer's tanktop up to place a soft kiss on her belly. "But you know, kid, it's not nice to wake mommy up at 3am and make her wake daddy up," he whispered, smiling as Summer laughed and ran her fingers through his hair. "Especially when daddy's got class and then work tomorrow."

"Would you rather I hadn't woken you up?" Summer said.

Ryan sat up again, still smiling, and shook his head. "I never would have forgiven you."

"Exactly," Summer said. "So I did right, right?"

"Right," Ryan said, leaning in to kiss her again. "I love you."

"I love you, too, Chino," Summer said, pushing him abck into a laying position and snuggling into his arms. "Now we better get back to sleep, or you're gonna look like crap tomorrow."

Ryan chuckled soflty and placed a kiss on Summer's forehead as he pulled the covers back over them. Life was good.

3.

Ryan woke to someone kicking him and calling his name angrily, so when he opened his eyes to look up at Summer he was ready to snap that he hadn't done anything, despite whatever she was hallucinating this time. "What?!" he snapped. Then he saw her exhausted face and immediately felt guilty. "What is it, baby?"

"She's crying again," Summer said, chewing on her lip. "I know you've got work, and stuff, but... she won't stop, and she always stops for you."

Ryan nodded and got up, placing a gentle kiss on Summer's forehead, getting up from the pull out couch he slept on and heading towards the nursery. "Hey, what's with the crying?" he asked the tiny baby as he picked her up. "It's okay, Uncle Ryan's here," he continued as he rested her head against his bare chest over his heart, and began slowly walking in circles. "Nobody can hurt you as long as I'm here."

Summer stood in the doorway, her arms wrapped around her stomach, and smiled as she watched Ryan with Marissa's daughter. Her ex-best friend hadn't bothered to call to check up on baby Claire in the 3 months since she had turned up, high on something, and shoved the baby into Ryan's arms with a mumble about not being able to do this, then run off. Since it had been almost 2 years sicne Ryan had last seen Marissa, and over 3 years since they had slept together, the baby obviously wasn't his, but he had decided to keep Claire and take care of her.

And that's where the frantic late night call to Summer had come in. Claire had a fever and Ryan had panicked, not knowing what to do. But Summer had come to the rescue and sat with him in the exam room while they waited for the doctor to return to the test results, more moral support than anything. And, a week later, Summer had invited herself to move into Ryan's apartment in San Fransisco and help him with Claire, leaving them with their current arrangement.

Ryan had given Summer the master bedroom, since the second room, which Seth had stayed in a few times when he'd visited, had already been redecorated as a nursery, and Ryan had moved out to the livingroom and the pull out couch. Everyone they knew in San Fransisco was convinced they were sleeping together, but it had yet to happen, despite a few very intense dreams of Summer's involving Ryan, shirtless, with whipped cream and chocolate spread all over...

Summer pulled herself from her thoughts as she realized Claire had stopped crying and Ryan was putting her back in her crib. When he didn't straighten immediately, Summer went to his side and wrapped an arm around his back, resting her head on his shoulder. "She loves you."

"She loves you, too," Ryan whispered, wrapping his arm around Summer's waist and turning to kiss the top of her head. "So do I."

Summer didn't respond at first, partially because she thought she'd misheard, then, finally, she smiled and turned to kiss his shoulder. "I love you, too, Chino."
