I have a place like that at Sumatanga. Right on top of the mountain on a huge rock over-hang. Sumatanga means "a place of rest and vision" and that's what it is. Nothing weird about having a place like that. :) We all could use it.
Glad you asked. :)saffronicJuly 29 2003, 22:37:26 UTC
I'm actually not completely sure. Some people say it's a word from some Native American tribe. But others say it could be Irish or Austrian (yeah, I know. quite a difference) though it really doesn't sound like either. The story goes though that on particularly long hikes, backpackers can venture just off the trail and out of the forest to a small clearing or field. Around the edges of the fields are small rock structures just high enough to rest a backpack on. As the hikers give their backs a break, they stand facing the clearing (which often gives the hiker a clear view of his destination). These rock structures, called "sumatangas", offer weary hikers "rest" from their trek and enough "vision" to motivate them to continue on with the journey they began.
