There was a growl.
Again. and again. and again.
Sesshoumaru paid no mind to the noise. Even though growls were signs of aggression, he recognized its maker. A little human girl can't possibly cause him any harm. Silently, he continued walking. Rin was still up, but by the time he finds a suitable resting spot, she will be too exhausted to move. Such frail things, humans.
A few minutes later, the growls had turned to little yips and giggles. Rin was still up and teeming with energy, Sesshoumaru noted. The child did not have more than her usual amount of sleep, ate no more than she usually ate and rested at her own leisure. Why was she so excitable tonight of all nights?
"Rin, you blasted girl, settle down before you irritate Sesshoumaru-sama!" Jaken squawked. "And stop with this infernal racket!"
"Master Jaken is so mean to me! Rrrr!" Rin replied, cheerful and perky as ever even though it was way past her bedtime. If it was any other night, she would be passed out on Ah-Un's back. He had half a mind to stop her nonsense, but they were in a relatively safe area and if the girl wished to make noise, she may.
It wasn't often he indulged her, but just this once, he supposes it would be alright. "Jaken, let her be."
"Y-yes, my lord! Yes, definitely!" Jaken squawked once more from Ah-Un's back. Rin giggled and ran off once more.
"Rin, keep close."
"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama!" Rin chirped in her usual sing-song tone, and yipped once more. Sesshoumaru didn't bother looking back. She tumbled, from the sounds of it. For a moment, silence reigned and Sesshoumaru wondered if the child would cry. Rin didn't do that often, but when she did...it was quite disconcerting. It also clawed at his nerves. Thankfully, she got up and continued on with her yipping and growling and jumping. She was like a pup in that sense, always up to something.
Sesshoumaru continued walking, but at a faster pace. Perhaps she'll tire more quickly if he sped up?
"We will rest here for the night." Sesshoumaru decreed as they pulled to a stop. "Rin, stop with your foolishness, and prepare for the night."
"But, Sesshoumaru-sama!" She whined, "I'm not tired!" The yawn following her drowsy protests begged to differ, and he couldn't help but roll his eyes at her typical childish behaviour.
"Do not talk back to Sesshoumaru-sama, lowly human!" Jaken immediately snapped. "Now do as he says."
Rin pouted but did go to Ah-Un, only stumbling every so often on her way there. "Good night, Sesshoumaru-sama, Master Jaken."
"Rin." It had been bothering him now. For hours, she had been yipping and growling. But why? She wasn't a demon, and as far as he knew, humans did not usually express such traits.
"Yes, Sesshoumaru-sama?"
"What were you doing before?"
"Huh?" Rin mumbled as she snuggled into a cocoon of blankets he had procured for her. Ah-Un snorted and adjusted themselves to let her rest her head on their forelegs. "Before what, Sesshoumaru-sama?"
"He means your infernal racket, brat!" Jaken snapped from his post by the base of a tree. "Your blasted growling and yipping!"
"Oh!" Sesshoumaru nodded, grateful that he didn't have to go into more detail. He just wanted to know. "I was chasing fireflies, milord." Rin smiled drowsily and yawned. "So pretty. Good night, Sesshoumaru-sama, Master Jaken."
Sesshoumaru smiled, chasing fireflies indeed.
