Me: "As long as your aphid friend isn't one of the ones that are eating my tomato plants. They've already lost most of their leaves - look!"
Lynxcub: "No, when he's hungry, I make him a sandwich."
Me: "With lots of leafy greens in it?"
Lynxcub: "Yes. And also some seed butter, for protein, because I like my insect friends and I want them to stay alive! Sometimes I even make him salads."
His invisible insect friends were a theme for the rest of the day - he even insisted on bringing the tarantula with him (in his empty cupped hand) to the park.
At some point while there he must have told the little girl he was playing with all about them, because I later heard her say to him "Would one of your insect friends like to go on this swing?" She also decided that she had an invisible butterfly friend.
The two of them seemed to hit it off well enough that when it was time for her to go, she begged her mom to set up a play date for her and the Cub. Must have been the influence of the invisible insects...
