Visualize that said in the Wicked Witch of the West's voice... :-)
You know, I have always considered spring and fall my favourite seasons. But this past spring, as I was getting over a major period of depression and delighting in everything coming back to life and the days getting longer and all that, I remember thinking "Spring is my favourite season, bar none. Everything DIES in the fall -- why did I ever think I liked that?"
Well, now that it's late summer, I know exactly why: BECAUSE SUMMER IS HELL, AND FALL MEANS IT'S OVER!!! Excuse my shouting. But it is SO horribly hot right now, and has been for days. The city is one big sticky, sweaty, smelly, smoggy steam bath. Everyone is either irritable as hell or so drained from dealing with the heat that they can't move, talk or think.
The sheets on my bed were literally soaked with sweat this morning -- when I got up to make tea and collect the newspaper, then went and sat back down on my bed while the kettle heated up to read the paper, I actually thought my cats had peed on the bed or something, before I realized that the wet patch exactly conformed to the outline of my body where I had been sleeping. That's just not right. And the bedroom is actually the coolest room in the apartment - it's worse in the living room where I am right now! I have a towel over my leather chair to protect it while I work at the computer...
Oh, and let's talk UV: the other day I managed to get a slight burn through SPF 29 sunblock, just in the course of walking about six blocks. Back on Pride Day, when I was actually out in the sun for a long time, I got a noticeable burn through SPF 45 sunblock, while wearing a broad-brimmed sun hat! I've never been into the whole vampire thing, but I'm starting to be able to identify. Sunlight is not my friend. If I go to that picnic next weekend, I'm going to have to bring six kinds of sunscreen and a parasol...
So: come on fall! Hurry up and get here! I want frost, cool breezes, coloured leaves, crisp fresh BREATHABLE air, and the ability to walk to the streetcar stop without frying like a bug under a magnifying glass!
All right, enough whining. There is actually some good news too...
- Inq Magazine finally launched, both the print and online versions. Another nice site to put in my portfolio, plus my writing in print for the first time in a while!
- As I mentioned in my last entry, my stepmother's surgery went amazingly well -- and I just found out she's getting out of the hospital tomorrow!
- Just now WHILE WRITING THIS, I landed a new client -- the phone rang midway through the above paragraph and it was someone I'd sent a web design quote to and not heard back from for a while. So I hadn't been sure if they were still interested, but as it turns out, not only have they decided to go ahead with the site, but they're wiring me the deposit tomorrow! Woohoo! Now I can do something exotic and exciting like get caught up on my rent or pay my cell phone bill!
So, life is good... But still way too damn hot!
