His mobile began to vibrate on the arm rest, the caller id telling him it was George. Using the remote control to lower the TV’s volume, Mitchell answered.

“Hey George, what’s up?” He asked, tensing at George’s voice; he sounded distressed.

“Mitchell, something’s wrong. Nina didn’t show up at the pub and she wouldn’t answer her phone so I came to her house and there’s no answer here either,” George’s voice was laced with anxiety.

“Well, maybe there was an emergency at work and she-,” Mitchell began to reason but George cut him off.

“No I called, they said they haven’t seen her since yesterday.” There was a pause. “Mitchell, I’m really worried, what if something’s happened to her?”

“Like what?”

“I don’t know! Something! Mitchell, please…”

“Ok, George just…just calm down, I’ll be right there.” Mitchell ended the call and grabbed his keys, calling up the stairs.

“Annie, I’m going out!”

When he arrived George was stood with his nose pressed against the front door, peering through the glass pane.

“I can’t see anything,” he said as Mitchell came to stand beside him. Mitchell peered in for a couple seconds before raising his hand and rapping his knuckles on the wood.

“Nina? Are you in there? It’s Mitchell.”

“Oh yes, good idea, I’d have never thought of knocking.” Mitchell could tell from the tone of his voice and his over animated gestures that George was verging on hysterical.

Ignoring the sarcasm in his friend’s comment, he stepped away from the door, pushing George down a couple steps. “Watch out.”

Using the railing and the wall to steady himself, Mitchell raised his leg and kicked the door with as much force as he could. There was a loud groan as the hinges gave way and the door swung open. Ignoring the scandalised look on George’s face, Mitchell stepped over the splintered wood and into the house. He heard George mutter something about breaking and entering but knew the other man was following anyway. They walked from the hall to the living room to the kitchen.

“Nina? ...Nina!”

“Nina, are you here?”

No reply.

Mitchell looked at George. “Upstairs?”

George nodded and followed silently, trying to ignore the niggling feeling in his stomach that there was something seriously wrong here. It was too quiet.

Deathly quiet.

The first door at the top of the stairs was the bathroom. The door was shut. They stood for a few moments, Mitchell’s hand hesitating over the handle. Though he’d never tell George, he was almost sure of what was waiting for them inside the room

Finally he pushed the door open and in an instant, all of George’s worst fears came to life in front of him
