The great design is so complex...

I was at the office today to fax a mortgage application, and I answered the most thought provoking phone call from a complete stranger. She wasn't looking for anyone in particular, she said. Odd. I inquired further.

Her: I just want to talk to someone.
Me: Just anyone?
Her: Yes. I just want to talk to someone who cares.
Me: Well, I care...
Her: Will you listen?!?!
Me: Sure! Let me go in my office.

Turns out, her father has been recently diagnosed with 2 types of cancer. He is also a raging alcoholic, and a junkie, according to T. She just doesn't have anyone that she can confide in - I never caught why. At one point, I asked her where she found our phone number. She just picked one off of her caller ID, she thought we were a collection agency. She gave me her father's name and phone number and asked me to call him and cuss him out and try to get him to listen when people are concerned for him. Then she asked if I could put him on a prayer list. I told her, "Sure!" We chatted a little more, and eventually ended the call. She asked my name again, told me to have a blessed day, and thanked me for caring. And then we hung up.

I wrote a note to the prayer list person, and as I was discussing the call with a co-worker, she asked me to put HER on the list, too. In a few days, she's having a lump removed from her breast. The biopsy came back ok, but the MRI didn't look good, so they decided to cut it out.

And I so very seldom go to the office during the day...
