So I saw RENT for the second time this weekend and I’ll probably see it many more times before it comes out on DVD. At first I was really confused about why I took such a strong liking to the movie… when I saw the stage production, I was just confused. The movie version made so much more sense!! I also bought the soundtrack last week and I’ve been listening to nothing else but Rent for the past week. I’m a total dork! Anyhoo, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, go see it. If you saw it once, go see it again!
Here’s why I like the musical so much:
Rent deals with difficult, yet pertinent issues in a candid, genuine way.
Rent teaches selfless COMPASSION for others, regardless of their lifestyle choices.
Rent teaches the importance of COMMUNITY - the people around you (not necessarily your family) who care for you.
Rent teaches us that REAL RELATIONSHIPS are the key to establishing true community with other people.
Rent teaches LOVE - for yourself, for those in your community, and for strangers you meet on the street.
Rent teaches LIFE, the reality of our mortality. It reminds us that as long as you choose not to feel, to live in the past, and to hide, you will never truly live or love.
The fabulous quotes from Rent are endless, so I won’t bore you with posting all my favorites. Just go see the movie if you haven’t seen it yet. Take your friends to the movie. Tell random strangers to go see the movie.
P.S. Did you know that Rent, at its core, is completely biblical? Take a look at the all-caps words in my list above. Those are all the things that Jesus taught! Cool.
