Talented though they may be, all of those women you referenced depended heavily on a manufactured "look" for their success, at least initially. Aside from being beautiful, they each had a persona that was expected to look a certain way, dress a certain way, and over time, I think their perception was (or the reality was) that expectation overshadowed the expectation that they'd just be good musicians or whatever.

It's a shame, and it's even weirder when you see older men who have fallen into the same trap, because it's REALLY hard to pull off a multiple face lifts when you're a dude.

Tying back to your catsuit reference, the funny thing is that I would assume, even today, that a person would have to have an abundance of CONFIDENCE to wear one in public, let alone as a performer. And yet, as they age, the very lack of confidence is what drives people to crazy levels of plastic surgery. Weird.

Your words make sense. I was kind of hoping that there was just some sort of chemical put in the water back in the 70s. And you know, I love the combination of their talents and sexuality when they're young. I've never rocked a catsuit, nor learned to play guitar but I wish I could do both. I also wish I could know whether or not (without the pressure to turn themselves into plastic) they could have become women I could fantasize about being like when I got older ( ... )
