Sleep Apnea

Does anyone know anything about sleep apnea??? My father was diagnosed with it by his physician this morning and I'm curious what the symptoms are. Is there a cure that anyone knows about? From what I've heard over the years, it can be rather serious. He's forced to use an oxygen machine. I haven't seen it yet but it sounds a lot like the machinery ( Read more... )

i'm not sure if it's hereditary or not. i don't think so though.

my husband has severe sleep apnea. it CAN be life-threatening. sleep apnea is basically a disorder where you stop breathing many times per night. hubby did this and i would wake up each and every time. in his case, he's stop breathing and then JOLT-breathe (kind of like gasping for air) which was always VERY loud and in the form of a snore. but i started to be in tune with when he would stop breathing and i'd wake up if he hadn't taken a breath for more than 15 seconds or so. it's SCARY when it's that severe and that's when it can be life-threatening because if you go too long without breathing, well... yeah.... so YES my hubby does wear one of those machines.

our married life is LOTS happier because he is quiet when he sleeps now, so therefore i can also get a good night's rest... plus he has LOTS more energy during the day because he is sleeping soundly and his body/brain/heart/etc is getting enough oxygen.

there are other options-- like having surgery, although if the sleep apnea is very severe (or even moderately severe) the surgery will NOT correct the sleep apnea, it will only make it better.

the machine does take some getting used to and it looks pretty damn funny, but it's not the end of the world. sleep apnea can be improved/lessened with weight loss, by the way. my hubby is pretty overweight and it got worse when he gained weight.

Thanks for sharing this with me. I read up on the disorder a little bit and was surprised at how many people are affected by it.

Everything you said makes perfect sense. I'm only living with him for another week so I guess I won't have much time to get used to it. He's a pretty private person so he'd probably prefer it that way. lol
